Making an Assassin...need help

The Assassin's 'Death Attack' isn't going to be very good unless you are going to take some levels in the class...

the victon gets to make a Fort save vs DC10 + assassin's class level + Int bonus.

Another option would be the Shadowdancer. When you and your Shadow companion attack someone, you would automatically get the flanking attack bonuses (sneak attack) And the Shadow is going to be STR damage every round (if he hits). It doesn't matter how many hitpoints your target has if the Shadow is doing STR damage...

Thanks for all of the help. They all sound pretty good. I may even use a feat to take a locking garrotte instead of an assassin level. Would this mayhaps make a better alternative?

While I do not know the garotte rules off-hand, if you want to look into Exotic Weapon Profincinecies, I would suggest Shuirikens.

3 attacks a round for very little damage isn't much, but when those 3 attacks each force a Fort save because of the poison coating them ... ;)

The main reason you take the assassin class is the poison use ability, not necessarily the death attack. Now... if you could convince your GM to let you expend a feat slot for this - you don't really need it.

if you focus on keeping a high dex and a high intelligence - your death attack will be 11 + int bonus. DC's in the 15-20 range aren't all that easy to make - which is where your attack will probably be.

The death attack is secondary to the manufacture of poisons. Black Lotus extract, while expensive, is some not nice stuff to use on your target. presuming they fail both saves - there isn't much out there that can handle 6d6 con damage and survive.

Locking garottes are grossly overpowered. Do you really need the feat? -4 to hit shouldn't matter when it's a touch attack against a flatfooted opponent. Why not a locking garotte AND an Assassin level?

Geoff.

Try a level of assasin for the poison use and then Arcane Trickster. AT gets sneak attack, good skill selection, and full spell progression for your wizard/sorcerer levels.

I am currently playing an Assassin in our D&D game on sundays.

I went Human Rogue 5/Assassin 3/ Herald 2 with an 18 Int.

The weapon he uses is a Shortsword +1, Corrosive. Now, the problem with Death attack has to do with the fact it requires 3 rounds of being undetected to get off. In a party that is willing to cast invisibility on me. I still am of more use just rolling around with tumble and making my attacks then actually waiting 3 rounds.

3 times 1d6+2 + 1d6 acid + 6d6 damage adds up much faster then one sneak attack plus a Fort save of 17. Those rounds just end up plain wasted. Do your party a favor and actually just bleed the creature to death with shear damage.

As a DM....

I've had the most effectiveness with an assassin who had disguise, bluff and change self. That way, you can look like someone else, pretend to be someone else convincingly, get close and study someone and then strike. Then you can escape looking like someone else, too.

In a crowd, kill someone, cast darkness, change to another form, run away looking like any other civillian.

You might want to take some skill that will let you mimic voices, too.

Well, turns out my DM is not allowing evil characters :(. May become a rogue, CN. Closest to evil as can be, I guess. I'll start roleplaying him how I wanted to and see if my DM allows it. If not, then I'll scrap this char :(.

ah, too bad...

I had this dwarven (no reason, I just like dwarves) ranger/rogue assasin PC I had designed and would never get to use...
