Try clicking on the symbol library icon in the lower left hand corner, or define your own.So while good for creating castles it seems not so good for overland maps. Unless I am missing something?
Er...I've got a heap of symbols available and can see none of the letters you're describing. Maybe you've got an old version?Right I saw those. But I was hoping for a little more than an "N" for a spiked bush or a "P" for a tree without foilage.

That's an elegant little hex mapper. It seems to be using the oD&D Gazetteer map symbols too, which I've always had a soft spot for. At first blush it seems to be limited to those symbols though, I might try and add to the hexlist later on (they're just bitmaps) and see if it picks them up...I have found a overland mapper not great but it is what I was looking for.
I think I know what's going on. I'm running 1.15, and I recall Autorealm being contacted by the Campaign Cartographer folks to remove the symbols that they "borrowed" from CC that were put in Autorealm. 1.15 probably was before they had to remove them...Well I downloaded it today. Version 1.19. AutoRealm. Is this the wrong program?
