Making Your Own Maps. Tips and Tricks.

First Post
I posted a question over in the software section: http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=188592 about map making software (please go there and tell me about some specific types of software). But I was thinking I should post this general question also.

Those of you who have been making maps for a while, what advice do you have for us amateur map makers? What are you doing differently now compared to when you started? Can we see some examples of your best stuff.

Thanks.

I figure this will get moved to the other forum soon.

But before that happens, I'm hoping there'll be a thread on battlemaps. The threads I looked at focused heavily on campaign maps, especially those that told you how to make maps.

I'm tired of white space maps.

Well, what I do, and find extremely effective, is just get your hands on some really big sheets of paper, and just draw on those. I have a plain battle grid that I made, and I just copy that and then draw on and color the details and cut out the shape of the room or hallways or whatever. I find a stiffer stock of paper is better too.

Are we talking geographic/world maps or like floor-plan/dungeon maps? Or maybe you meant both and all maps?

Cause those are like two completely different things to me.
