Manyshot question

I am a bit confused about manyshot.

As I understand it with a BAB of 16+ you can fire 4 arrows at one target as a standard.

As a 16th level Ranger does this mean with a Full Attack action including Rapid shot you can do the following within 30 feet,

first primary at -10 - 4 arrows
second primary at - 2 - 1 arrow
secondary at - 7 - 1 arrow
tertiary at - 12 - 1 arrow
quaternary at -17 - 1 arrow

so for a full attack a 16th + level ranger can fire off 8 arrows with in 30 feet? Is this correct?

Thanks in advance.

No. Manyshot requires a standard action; Rapid shot requires a full round action. The two feats are mutually exclusive -- it's one or the other.

Okay. This is also what Skip Williams said in his recent Sage Advice 3.5 in Dragon #310, and it's actually confused me.

As I understand it, making an attack, or a disarm, or a trip, or any of numerous other actions, is a standard action. Making more than one because you have a high base attack action requires a full round action. I'm under the impression that I can swing at somebody with my full attack bonus, then attempt a trip at -5, then a disarm at -10, and so on.

Is this somehow wrong? How is it that Manyshot, which like a standard attack is a standard action, can't be lumped in with other attacks in a full round action? It isn't as if it's, say, drinking a potion or picking a lock or some other standard action - it's an attack!

Surely the point is that you have to suck up not only the Manyshot penalties and the rapid loss of ammo, but the Rapid Shot and multiple attack penalties if you fire off two or three arrows for each attack? How does Manyshot not qualify as an attack action?

Cheers,
Cam

Look at Table 8-4 in the 3.0 PHB, p128.

Trip, Grapple, and Disarm are Action Type: Varies, with a footnote stating they can be used as part of a charge, full attack action, or AoO.

Strike a Weapon, on the other hand, is Action Type: Standard, and lacks the footnote.

If Manyshot were on the table, it would be identical to Strike a Weapon. It's a Standard Action, which means it can't be made as part of a Full Attack Action, as opposed to a trip, say, which can, as a variable-type action.

One attack is a standard action.
Full attack is a full-round action.

Manyshot is another standard action, but no attack. You cannot use manyshot as one of your attacks in a full round action, just as you cannot cast a spell (with standard action casting time) and do some additional attacks, combining it to a full-round action.

So consider manyshot more like casting a spell then an attack.
