I can see how you made the elevations (Layer -> Blend Mode -> Bevel) and the only problem I see, and it is minor, are two points concerning the source of light. One, the direction which is currently coming from the top-right might look better coming from the top-left. The eye interputs a birds-eye-view of terrian better this way I believe. Two, the 'color' of the light is currently the default black and white -- try using light green and dark green instead.

One final point concerning the contour of the topography, once the terrian layers are flattened -- use a broad (Filters -> Liquid Tool) to 'wiggle' out the stiffness -- this will make them look more random and thus more realistic. These are just some ideas I am sharing. I love the map -- awesome work! :D

Great advice Crabclaw, it actually mirrored some of my own complaints I made about the map over at Candlekeep.com.

"The map has a number of issues though, but they're not worth putting in all the hours it would take to fix. I don't like that all my buildings have shadows of the same heights. I don't particularly care for the way I blended the garden/grass covered buildings with the hillsides (the way I did it was fairly time efficient but not too pretty). And lastly, the whole things simply looks too "clean", I would have preffered a less uniform look to all textures, giving it a more hand-made look (less computer generated)."

Of course, the big issue was time... your advice on it is pretty easy to implement though. I'll work on it tonight if I can spare some time. Thanks again :).
