Martial characters and rituals

I agree. I also hope that martial characters will be unable to use rituals. The idea of fighters casting scry and rogues casting resurrection is just too weird for me.

I don't mind it, myself. Maybe I've watched to many episodes of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, but I liked it when you had a non-magic user like Giles using ritual magic for whatever reason. Don't see why a learned Fighter or Rogue couldn't do the same.

I could get behind that. It's the utility magic that I don't think should be available to anyone, things like phantom steed, teleport, scrying, summoning, magic circles of protection, etc.
I disagree. The only prerequisite I'd have is that this would require some training in Arcana or similar skills, and possibly some skill checks. (And off course I am fine with requiring a feat to do that, too).

I think magic is a little more creepy if anybody could try it - even those that are least qualified, resulting in rituals gone wrong and terrible thaumaturgical mistakes...

Remember the warblade's ability to spend a certain amount of time each day training with a specific weapon in order to shift his weapon feats to another kind of weapon? I envision martial characters having the option of doing something like that.

So, when a fighter wakes up, they can train for 'x' amount of time with their weapon and get specific bonuses to it for the day.

Bruenor made Wulfgor's hammer, so I don't see any problem with martial characters getting rituals. It would actually fit certain settings more than previous renditions of D&D.

Yep. This was one of the things in 3.x that i hated the most. No way for dwarves to make magic items as they do in fiction. Always bugged the hell out of me.

Hm, I wonder if we'll see a return of the current high-level morning ritual, where everyone gets their heroes' feast and hourly duration spells up.

In some ways, that would be funny.

It gives me a certain "Arcana Evolved" vibe, now that I am thinking about it. Ceremonies played a big role in that game (but the rules weren't really solid for it, except for the Ceremony feats). In a "magic-permeated" world it make sense that people would perform rituals or ceremonies for important tasks - like clearing a dungeon.

I hope that the system is "extensible" enough to support such an idea. Rituals like "Rite of Passage", "Ceremony of Travelling", "Ritual of Homecoming", "Cleansing Ritual" and so on...

they wouldn't be available to anyone though...only those who took the feat and then learned the ritual (bought it).

I suppose the upshot of this is that a fighter would only have access to those rituals that you (the DM) allowed him to...

...but if a fighter wants to spend the feats to learn Arcane and / or Religion and Ritual Casting (sure feats aren't as precious as they used to be but still, there are fightery things he could be doing with those), i think that (for other than a human) 2-6 levels worth of feats (1st, 2nd, 4th likely being the fastest for all three) is a perfectly good "cost" to learn to do some magic.

Also once PHB2 comes out with Primal/Nature based Rituals (I am taking the assumption there will be). Those who want the Ranger to have some druidic/nature oriented magic can take Ritual Casting and use Nature based Rituals.

I wouldn't be much of a disconnect if Psions could use rituals. Especially when you consider that many psionic powers were "psionic-x" versions of spells that would be rituals in 4e if they exist, like "remote viewing/scrying", "psionic fabricate" or "psionic locate creature" and then there's unique psionic powers like "genesis", "astral caravan" and "dreamwalk" which would likely be rituals too.

So far nothing indicates you need "x level in x class" to cast a ritual, but I haven't seen a ritual entry yet. They could require skill checks, and its possible they may use some skills other than arcane or religion, like possibly heal or insight for their checks.

Arcana Evolved is a good place to get some ideas about martial rituals. There are many in there that have ceremonies to obtain new weapon training, ritualistic combat techniques, etc.

Further, things like divinations wouldn't need to be relegated to spellcasting classes. Anyone can take in some incense, mediate, and gain insight into the world in a fantasy setting.
