You know, honestly, I just read this thread from Page 1, and the very first thing that seemed to happen was that Thrudjelmer asked questions in a nonjudgmental way and Neo responded with "Oh, going right for the jugular," calling for support from everyone else against an attack that, really, wasn't actually an attack. I didn't see Thru's initial comments as rude at all, but they were perceived as such by others. Frankly, I agreed with a lot of Thru's comments. I don't have much use for a PL18 character. Most of the characters in the comics are either using hero points or under the effect of some plot device when they pull their once-in-a-lifetime super-feats, and Power Level inflation strikes me as fairly silly, most of the time.

Really, with a few notable exceptions, you can make anyone PL-anything and get away with it. Sure, you need to get Lifting capacity into the right neighborhood, and figure out how fast the guy can run/fly, but that's about it. Heck, I'd love to see somebody do Green Lantern with ranges from PL7 to PL17, getting more extras and power stunts as he goes along, and having more things he can do just off the cuff, and fewer things that he has to spend a hero point for. The hero points are important, and they're important to consider when building characters as well. Just because somebody bench-presses an airliner at the climax of an issue doesn't mean they can do that all the time -- it means that they used a huge amount of effort to do it that one time, and they're going to be fatigued thereafter (unless they use the aforementioned hero point).

Questions about Devices, Natural Ability scores, and so forth are hotly debated all over the M&M boards. Some people suggest strict requirements, like Thru is suggesting. Others use an informal "the power boosted their normal scores up, and THEN gave them Super-Powers" argument, which is closer to what Neo is using. Devices... Steve Kenson pretty much says "If it's not going to be a disadvantage regularly, it's not a flaw/weakness." Wolvie's admantium isn't a device, and neither is Venom's symbiote, since neither one gets taken away from them on a regular basis. They lose it for plot reasons, sure, but they're not disarmed in combat. On the other hand, classic Green Lantern gets his ring stolen a lot, or he finds himself tied up with his ring being held by the bad guy across the room. Definitely a Device flaw.

I personally disagree with many of the Quirk Weaknesses as well. I think that they're assigned too liberally based on a hero's personality. Again, a weakness is only a weakness if it's a disadvantage. "Driven to whack bad guys, such that I can never have a normal relationship with friends" sounds great for the Punisher, or even with Spidey, but it's not a good M&M weakness, because we're not playing "have a normal relationship with friends, the roleplaying game". We're playing a game where whacking bad guys and sacrificing your personal life to save the world are expected behavior. By the same token, being unwilling to kill isn't a weakness in a four-color campaign, where very few white-hat heroes kill people, and where such behavior is expected. It would qualify as a weakness in a grim & gritty cyberpunk-ish game, where your character was derided as a weird wimp for being unwilling to kill his foes once he's defeated them, despite the fact that all the "cool" heroes are doing so.

So, while I appreciate the effort hugely, there are some areas where I disagree with the conversion choices. They might be faithful representations based on your superior comic book expertise (and I freely admit that you've got more expertise, Neo, no question), but then again, they might not, based on how much can be done with Extra Effort (which seems to have been neglected in favor of power creep in some cases), flavor text, or roleplaying. And if it is a faithful representation, then which era and which author's version of that hero are you representing? As you noted, comics have an inevitable power creep. Why make a conversion that's at a PL that most people won't be able to use?

At this point, of course, everyone is screaming at each other, but please, read the earlier stuff and tell me if Neo doesn't sound just the slightest bit condescending. I'm not saying that he was condescending, but then, I'm saying that Thru wasn't initially rude until everyone stepped in to defend Neo from Thru's "going for the jugular"... which seemed to be a bit of an overreaction.

Well, the way I see it, Neo's response to Thru's post wasn't an overreaction at all (notice the smiley with the jugular comment). Thru's post started reasonably polite, but bringing in gross misrepresentation rather than opinions. Where I come from, a gross misrepresentation is generally a willful attempt to deceive someone, like when politicians grossly misrepresent their opponent's positions in attack ads (and we'll see tons of those this year). If Thru had said that he thought Neo was just off target or didn't really capture the real feel of the character based on most of the comic canon, then it would have remained polite.
When Neo countered with his reasons for his interpretations of the characters (and that's really all conversions are as has been pointed out), he persisted in saying that Neo was flat out wrong. Meanwhile, Neo was still game to explain his conversion decisions and why some other people may come to other conclusions. And, as I see it, Thru continued to dig his hole deeper by refusing (seemingly) to acknowledge that people may weight the evidence of the comics differently, apply the mechanics of M&M differently, and reach different conclusions than his own. It really looked to me like an avalanche that got going with the tone of Thru's criticisms getting harsher and harsher, eventually saying that Neo shouldn't be able to call these conversions so much as interpretations (but since the Marvel characters weren't designed for the M&M game, nor was the M&M game designed specifically for the Marvel universe, any conversion is exactly an interpretation of the character through the M&M framework and thus no conversion can claim the title any better or worse than others... except in how it fits the reader's concept of that character and desires for their M&M campaign, and as it was pointed out, Thru had Valdier's conversions to check out for lower PL conversions).
My point is, ultimately, that Thru was the architect of his own demise in this thread and Neo, while maybe a little thin skinned about initial combativeness from Thru, stuck in there until it really became pointless to continue to argue the basis for his conversions. The early defenses of Neo were really just a call to simmer down and be aware that the tone was getting a bit over the top, a criticism of his criticisms if you will, that he directly rejected in a manner that I thought was quite rude.
Now I might disagree with some of Neo's interpretations too, I can use or not user them at my option. I thank him for his effort and creativity. I might even be able to tweak one or two of them to fit my ideas a little better (personally, I'm kind of ignoring the whole bone claw thing they did to Wolverine because I thought it was silly... I actually got pretty fed up with superhero comics around that time and stopped buying most. Ultimates and Ultimate Fantastic Four are, however, drawing me back in). But I'm not about to blatantly say he's wrong because he chose a particular way to apply the mechanics unless there's a definite problem in the addition of the points or application of a rule. I'm even willing to give a pass on max and heavy load lifting amounts because sometimes it's better to have a good stat in the game that reflects, based on the mechanics, about how much damage a character should do in the game rather than rely on unreliable comic books where the interpretation of that character's abilities may vary from writer to writer.
I certainly won't say that I am perfect when it comes to tone. I got kind of snarky in this debate too, but I'll make an effort to be constructive, civil, and respectful of other people's efforts. Thru looked like he would do so at first but he really made a couple of missteps in online etiquette and then started digging for China.

Speak for yourself. . .

If a comic book or a supers campaign doesn't try to deal woth the "normal" relationships of the hero with his family/friends/co-workers (or each other) whether in his alter-ego or as a hero, then it is not worth reading or playing. :-)

No, not at all. In fact, dumbarse,
Step over line, why don't you?

Yeah, consider me moving along. If the inarticulate, reading-deficient posters in this thread are any indication of EN World, I'd better find another forum where INTELLIGENT debate and CREATIVE thought is encouraged more than phony politeness and nicey-nice B.S.
Off you go then!

No, at this point, I just don't give a big steaming pile about getting banned.
Rightio! See ya!

Can't say i'll miss him, he wasn't very likeable.

but that aside he did stick to his guns to the bitter end, which you kinda have to respect I guess.

I'm looking for d20/OGL stats for a creature like the Man-Thing from Marvel or similarly, DC's Swamp-Thing. Anyone have these stats available online?

Thanks, Stratos
