My LGS says February 12th and that their distributor is sticking to that date.

What happened to everything coming out a week or so early? Now everything is going to be a week or so late? WTF???

All right, this is getting interesting......I called back my LGS, they said what they were really told was the week of the 11th - 15th, most likely the 12th. So, I called Hastings, they say the 28th. I called the WotC Store, and I might as well have asked them, "What's in my pocket?" - they had no clue when it'll be out. Yet, it is somehow out on February 1st, in Mississippi.

This is sad. Can someone from WotC please tell us when we should expect this book? (No guesses please, we've got PLENTY of those already.)

Information, are you telling us the correct... well... information? Everywhere I've seen so far it's been the week of February 10th.

I'm a receptionist in a sales office for one of the largest games distributors in the US. Our computer has Feb. 15 for the street date. That means that we'll do everything we can to have it in the hands of retailers by that date. They are not supposed to sell it before the street date if they happen to receive it early.

With that said, I must say that I've been reading a lot of Feb. 12 claims on the web and I can't say that that is incorrect. Oftentimes companies will alter release dates at the last minute (most push them back, but WotC likes to push them forward). So Feb. 12 sounds very reasonable, despite my computer saying Feb. 15.

Also, I must add that WotC stores and Game Keeper stores (owned by WotC) get their WotC stuff a week or so before other retailers. It's a perk of thier being owned by the publishing company, so it wouldn't surprise me to hear of people finding the product on shelves really soon. If any non-WotC stores have the book before official street date they can really get nailed by thier distributor for it.

I hope this helps.

I thought I had heard from someone/where that WotC didn't support "street dates," and in fact strongly discouraged them.

August 10th, 2000 - Ryan Dancey got rather peeved when some retailers broght out the player's handbook as early as August 8th.

However, both Keith Strom and Ryan Dancey said once (about 6 months ago, around the time of Tome and Blood or the FRCS, I forget which) that it was very difficult to coordinate such a thing because the retailers themselves often didn't communicate well internally - and trying to have unified street dates was more trouble than it was worth, unless it was either a major release, or you had a huge amount of clout with said distributors.

As a result, you will sometimes see books released up to two weeks ahead of schedule in some locales.
