wow I learnt this song when I was about 9 at primary/elementary school

I never understood the english habit of reifying their criminals

Nope, he means "reify". And, um, we kinda do it too ... some of our pop culture Old West "heroes" were pretty much scum in real life. Throw in some romanticized gangsters from the 20's, and look at who's popular in the current media, and clearly America likes it's crooks, too. I don't understand it, either.

Reify means "To regard or treat (an abstraction) as if it had concrete or material existence."

Deify means to idealize, possibly as a god.

So, no, I don't think he meant reify and I don't you do either. :)

The English habit, you say? Good one. Hah! Nearly had me going for a sec there. :)

Hm, not my favourite Beatles song, that. Though not the worst either, in my opinion.

This song has some great memories for me...

My oldest was in a Venture Scout group that had a theater bent. They did this song at one of their performances and acted it out as they sang it. My son was Maxwell, he was the smallest, most unassuming kid on the stage, and went bonkers (literaly) with this oversized novelty hammer made of foam and covered in silver foil tape. He would "BangBang" them on the head and then do this little happy dance during the chorus.

In the end verse he got to smash the whole rest of the group (playing the gallery, the constible, the judge, etc) and so he was the only one on stage left standing, until the song ended - that one got a standing ovation - What a ham! :D
