maybe be a very basic bow question

I dont beleive there is a cap on how powerful you can get a mighty bow in 3.5. It doesnt state it anywhere and the War Troll has a +10 Composite longbow.
Correct. There is no cap on composite longbows in 3.5e (the MM storm giant has a +14 bow, for example). Just pay the requisite extra 100 gp per +1 of Str bonus, up to whatever suits your PC (or NPC, as the case may be).

Right, which is why in another thread it was mentioned that a lot of archers stop increasing their strength after a certain point....
A hidden cost for archers!

That is: fighter-types usually increase their damage/attack in three important ways:
  • Adding enhancement bonuses
  • Adding "extra damage" to the weapon, like flaming or holy
  • Increasing their Strength
This last option is not readily available to archers.

Poor archers! ;)

Max of +4 Str

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that medium-sized characters can only use bows with this strength bonus, and that you have to be a creature of Large or bigger size to wield bows with a higher strength bonus. This might be the rules from 3.0e, but I can't seem to remember :heh: .

There's no such limitation in 3.5e. That is to say: "If it's not written, it's not assumed." Besides: why should there be a limit?

You did read that. In 3.0. It didn't make it over to 3.5, since it really didn't make a lot of sense. :)
