Many people have been driven off by the over-emphasis on the dungeon and the lake of diverse settings. Too much crunch...

WotC is clearly going to shift D&D into a rules set that emphasizes story, maybe pad out the MM to one page per monster minimum, give some better backstory.

More different settings. Maybe scrub out some references to reduce the Angry Mother Effects.

And Get rid of Half-Orcs and Monks while you're at it.
