[Md20] Ever wish you could play "yourself" in another setting?

Hi folks...

There's something I've always wanted to explore in RPGs: taking a modern day character and dropping them into another setting...

Now we have d20 Modern... You can make a PC modelled upon an alter ego, an idol, or even facsimile of yourself!

Then... Take the character, or group of PCs, and plunk 'em into a setting like... The Wheel of Time, or you fave D&D setting.

Think about it... how often have _you_ wanted to travel to another world when reading a book, watching a movie or your favourite TV show, and participate in the drama there as yourself?

We already do this somewhat in roleplaying--but now change that PC into a closer "copy" of you and your skills, stats, etc. D20 Modern may just do the job quite nicely. How would you and your friends survive if tossed into the WoT setting? How would you like to meet Obi-Wan Kenobi "in person" if your immediate alter ego were thrust into the space operatic drama of Star Wars? Wouldn't it be cool to meet Mulder & Scully as "yourselves" swept up in some d20 X-Files wild story line?

I guess the fun part is describing yourself today in Md20 terms!

Whadda ya think? :) (Or am I completely off my friggin' rocker? LOL)

-W.

I'm waaaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of you, Winterthorn. ;)

Check the "Lee Williams" link in my sig for a PC that's pretty much me for a "Buffy/Angel" style game Angelboi is running (link also in my sig).

Also, I put "Lee" and a stated up version of my girlfriend up in the Rogue's Gallery for commentary and discussion of the quirks inherent in representing real people. Check it out!!

The true fun is making your firend and playing him :D

You know what'd be neat? Everone making D20M versions of themselves, bringing them to game night... and everyone passing their character sheet to the left. :D

The campaign could be called "Have you ever walked a mile in his shoes?"

i guess i'm going to be the one naysayer here, but, no

creating yourself was the basis for character creation in an old superhero game you may or may not have heard of, called Villains and Vigilantes. this was the first thing house ruled out of the game

for a RPG, i'm just not interested in playing myself, even with super powers or spells or big guns or whatever. in a RPG, i want to play someone who is exactly NOT me.

i'm just boring that way...

i've done it once or twice in GURPS games. one was a magic/supers campaign where the PCs were the first heroes in the world and the only ones who knew the truth about a demonic invasion. the second was a time travel/alternate universes campaign.

i don't know if i'd want to try it again. emotions can run kinda high when the character you are playing is exactly yourself. talk about being attached to your character! :p

one note of caution: if you're going to DM a game like this, be very gentle in reviewing the PCs. if someone says that he has a 15 Intelligence and you say, "Nah, i don't think you're that smart," things can start to get ugly. :(

Well, to clarify, the game I made myself for, I'm the only person (to my knowledge) to do that.

Also, for the self-stating, I didn't think of it so much in absolute terms as relative. I had X points to use, so I distributed them in to reflect my comparative strengths.
