Mechanical penalties for losing an arm?

Quick Opinion

-2 to hit (or something along these lines).
This due to the fact that you might be using your whole body you do have less "options" to choose from and that would make it harder to fool an enemy and hit him so to say.

I don't think the monk should any penalty to attacks. According to the rules, monks don't need free hands to make attacks; they can be carrying two cages with chickens in them and have no penalty. Thus, I'd think losing one arm or even both would not affect their combat abilities (skills and the such, sure).

You can be like that shaolin monk in Shaolin Soccer who attack everything with his head :) I'd love to DM a PC with that concept.

Monks bring new meaning to being able win with both their hands tied behind their back (well.. besides wizards/sorc with still spell)

Thats why I added drain 20 seconds after I posted :)

Just make sure to not treat it as "generic" ability drain, to be taken care of with a Restoration spell. Require a Regenerate for missing limbs. Thats what its there for.

Too slow! Bwaaaahahaha! ... ahem.

I think ability damage would be fine for something like a broken bone, but I think using damage or drain for missing limbs is just too clunky.

Would seem that some sort of grapple penalty may be in order. Get a bonus w/extra arms, seems like there should be a penalty for having only 1 arm

The DMG has variant rules on damage to specific areas on page 27. Damage to an arm invokes a -2 penalty to Climb and Swim checks, attack rolls and Strength checks. I'd tend to boost that to -4 for complete loss of a limb, perhaps with the exception of attack rolls.

Assuming spellcasting services are available in your gameworld, a regenerate spell may be procured for as little as 910 gp if you can find an appropriate caster, so such injuries need not be permanent to the average adventurer.

The hook prosthetic, from d20 Cyberscape says the following: A hook partially replaces the function of its biological counterpart. It allows limited manipulation, and any action that requires two hands is done at a –4 penalty. A hook can be treated as a simple weapon in an external weapon mount (see page 195 of d20 Future).

Hope that helps.

Regards.

take the drain to str and dex ,cause that represents overall loss, eg, loss of ballance, force when swinging ect. this will represent the penalty to attacks aswell

then take a penalty ( prob at least -4 but increase dep on circumstances) to skills that depend on 2 arms but think of ways that the player might alliviate the penalties some way. ( eg some sort of special equipment/holster, having an ally assist so instead of the usuall roll for plus 2 he rolls to take away the penalty of the 1 arm guy.)

its too bad that d&d has no offical way to handle limb loss at all, only by dm fiat, i found a sheet that handles them for special crits of 2 20s.
