Medium Flame Dagger and Flurry

Binho

First Post
I realized that the spell Flame Dagger shows the damage of a medium dagger (a dagger used by a medium character). Would it be possible to change that? Like, instead of creating a medium dagger of fire, create a large dagger to deal 1d6 of damage (applying the -2 of penalty as said in PH)? Is it possible for anyone, or just if the caster is large too?

Additionally, could a monk using a weapon that is not designed for his size category use the flurry? For example, the Ogre drops a Large Dagger and the monk pick it and flurry over him, taking -4/-4 of penalty.

Thanks in advance!

I think the Flame Dagger spell inflicts damage because it's fire, not necessarily a dagger that is doing damage. The flame just happens to take the form of a dagger in your hand. At least, that is the way I interpret it.

As for the Monk and Flurry question, I believe as long as the weapon appears on the Monk's special weapon list of those useable with Flurry, then yes, using an inappropriately sized weapon/Flurry should be possible with the size category penalty and all.

That is not right, the spell damage is 1d4, not 1d6. The spell says that it creates a bladelike beam that you can wield as if it were a dagger. But I think it was designed to function for a medium wizard. Would be reasonable that a larger creature could cast a larger dagger? And it would be possible to grow the size of the blade to fit the needs of the caster, like using a greater dagger to do more damage?

Flame dagger is a 2nd level spell from Spell Compendium. It is in the list of wizard/sorcerer. The fluff stuff is : You evoke the spell and a blazing beam of red-hot fire springs forth from your hand, ready to be used as a weapon.

The spell descriptor is: You create a bladelike beam that you can wield as it were a dagger. Attacks with a flame dagger are melee touch attacks, and the blade deals 1d4 points of fire damage + 1 point per caster level (to a maximum of +10). Because the blade is imaterial, your Strength modifier does not apply to the damage.

"You create a bladelike beam that you can wield as it were a dagger"

This sentence is use for the sake of weapon profiences, feats and special abilities that are keyed from dagger use (ie Weapon finesse or weapon focus).

I haven't read the spell so I may be misinterpreting it, but it sounds like the weapon created is a flaming dagger (deals 1d6 Fire damage on a hit) but without the physical damage of the weapon. it would increase in size with the wielder but still deals 1d6 damage, weapon focus, finesse or special abilities for a dagger might not work with this "weapon" because it is not a dagger it is a spell but that is a DM's call.

As for Flurry again that is your DM's call, I would say yes because it states "You create a bladelike beam that you can wield as it were a dagger" and, I think, a Dagger can be Flurried with.

EDIT: I said 1d6 after reading a page the Flaming weapon enhancement, I meant 1d4 for the spell

The spell deals 1d4+1/CL until 10. Actually, by RAW, the a Colossal creature still would deal 1d4 points of fire damage. My thought was that the spell is not "complete". I think the person that developed the spell did not cover creatures other than the medium characters.
I was thinking of building a rogue/monk and, using UMD, create a way to flurry, touch attack and do not depend on Str. But 1d4+3 is very low damage.
Thanks everyone for the answers.

Should large creatures deal more damage with Magic Missile, Melf's Acid Arrow, and Fireball? I mean, they're bigger, so they must cast bigger spells, right?
