D&D 5E [Merged] D&D Next/5E Release Schedule Threads

Man, where do you get that from? How is that a more logical conclusion from @mearls ' tweet than simply assuming the character generation information will just be in the box?
Because:

a) The product page for the boxed set does mention prefab characters but doesn't mention chargen rules.
b) The boxed set is $20, which means they must have been counting every penny and begrudging every inch of space.
c) They only have 32 pages for the "how to play" booklet, which is barely more than the size of the playtest "How to Play" PDF (29 pages).
d) A box which includes prefab characters does not actually need chargen rules to be playable.

Therefore, while it is possible the box will include chargen rules, it seems much more likely that all such non-essential things would be provided in an online supplement instead. I bet they'll have other goodies too, like a low-level bestiary. It's the perfect way to offer a fully functional starter set while keeping the price down.

...and the Marketing Blitz commenced!

Because if it was included in the box, I suspect he would have said, "Lots of questions about character creation and the starter set - they will definitely be included."

Instead, he went for the longer, more oblique "you will definitely be able to make characters when it comes out."

While consistent with what Mearls tweeted, I think this view suffers from a lack of real support. Nothing contradicts it, but I don't see anything that points at this as being the likely scenario, either. It's a viable hypothesis. :) At this point, about as viable as "they're in the book," which certainly has Occam's Razor going for it.

Another viable hypothesis, as long as we're throwing out ideas, is that the game is OGL, and WotC plans on having a d20-esque "D&D license" for more officially sanctioned works that will have an SRD, and that SRD will include 5e's character generation rules.

THAT'S even a little more far-fetched than some sort of free online supplement or something, though still within the realm of possible. No real support for it, of course.

The only thing we can say for sure is that there will be chargen rules when the intro set comes out. Which is good news, whatever distribution those rules require!

I don't disagree with any of this.

That suggests to me, that they will not be included, but people will be able to make characters when the starter set is released. Ergo, online rules.

I think the simplest assumption is that it's in the box, until someone says it's not. Sure, there are space limitations but it still may be in there somewhere.

I think the second most likely option is that 5E DDI is available when it releases and the first 5 levels of character generation are free, much like 4E launched with levels 1-3 available for all for free.

Third I could see a download with a PDF of the chargen rules on the WOTC site.

That's my 2cp.
