[Merged] Hackmaster reviews?

I personally think Hackmaster goes too far afield for a d20 or D&D 3E fan to find it of much use. Thus I think reviews of that product line are unnecessary here. The question, though, is, how much effort does it take to include them? How much effort does it take to moderate the reviews that might be posted? My instinct is that it will be some work, as it is for any product.

When you throw in stuff that's not D&D or d20 compatible, you cloud the purpose of the reviews system. In a situation where you already have information overload, adding more irrelevant information is not a good option.

So? Whether we like it shouldn't be an issue. I like HERO 5, too. But I don't recommend we review it here. Just like Hackmaster, it isn't D&D or D20.

It's not D&D? Hum, you really should read the book before you make incorrect statements... but I am not suprised.

Yes, it is D&D. From the HackMaster Player's Handbook title page:

HackMaster is based on the original Dungeons and Dragons rules created by E. Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson

Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, AD&D, and Dungeons and Dragons are all trademarks owned by Wizards of the Coast, Inc., a subsidiary of Hasbro, Inc., and are used by Kenzer and Company under license.

I'm more or less with Col and others. Yes, it's an exception. So? I don't see how allowing hackmaster is going to turn us into RPG.net, really I don't. For the record, I _WOULD_ object to, say, Blue Planet, being posted just because a D20 publisher produces it. I'm NOT upset to see Everquest, and I'm NOT upset to see Hackmaster.

I disagree that it is irrelevant, but OK. I've had my say, and I see the writing on the wall.

I have. You are the one who should be cautioned about making incorrect statements.

No, it's not. It bears no D&D logo. "Based on" =/= "is."

It has no interoperability (short of some serious hammering) with 3e or any other d20 product. Unlike Everquest.

Further, people who play it are largely people who disdain 3e and/or d20. I fear the same sort of schenanigans that poison so many of the d20 reviews over on RPGnet if you open that door.

I think your "slippery slope" concerns are unfounded. Who else will be publishing a game based on older editions of D&D/AD&D? Why would it dilute the reviews page or harm EN World to include HackMaster? It's a special case. I think the SRD stipulation is searching for an excuse to exclude HackMaster. I cannot see what harm could be done. If it was a completely different game - say, Star Children: The Velvet Generation or the rerelease of Beyond the Supernatural - I could see it. Those are neither d20 nor D&D. HackMaster is a licensed D&D product. There will almost certainly be no other special cases like HackMaster - any other D&D product beyond HackMaster will either be d20 or OGL compliant.

I agree 100 percent. If nothing else it lets us old school D&Ders that remember 1e reminisce, and it is D&D after all!
