MIA: Green Slime

And if anyone can identify the source of those "iconics", I'll mail them a prize. That's the least I can do for someone who, like me, has a mind cluttered with useless D&D trivia.

THE SLIME ABIDES!

The original Rogues Gallery (1980), which includes Gary Gygax's Bigby, Riggby and Mordenkainen, Harold Johnson's Grimslade, Rob Kuntz' Sir Robilar, Ernie Gygax's Serten and Tenser and Erol Otus' Valerius.

I miss rot grubs. I think they should return to D&D using the new "swarm" type from FF and MM3.5. A swarm of rot grubs would rule! Oooh, maybe also a mutant flying rot grub variety!

Oh man! I still remember the picture in the original Monster Manual with the fighter with rot grub infesting his arm. That was scary stuff for a 12 yr. old.

Very close, and an honorary No Prize for placing the designers' names to their PCs, but the Grimslade I'm talking about was a fighter. You're in the right time period, though.

Dude, I love rot grubs. And those ear ones that hid in rotted wooden doors... were those rot grubs too? I always thought that the hapless rot grub victim from the MM looked like Rock 'n Roll from GI Joe.

I know where all of the green slime went. Monte stole it. He took all of the green slime and put it into the Banewarrens.

I could tell you more, but I won't.

I used some of the green slime in there to take out one of the BBEGs of the module when I went through it. I was quite proud of how I handled that situation with all my class powers temporarily nullified. Of course I was knocked to - 7 hit points in the second round by the BBEG's warrior flunky.

Green slime, biological warfare in D&D for when the fight gets nasty.

It's good to see that the greatest monster ever created (let's just ignore this "dungeon hazard" business, ok?) is getting its due. I mean, who here hasn't had to cope with a green slime? The proto-iconic characters (Indel the Elf! Valeria the Cleric! Grimslade the Fighter! The Wizard Whose Name I Forgot!) had to cope with one. That makes it a classic, baby.

And if anyone can identify the source of those "iconics", I'll mail them a prize. That's the least I can do for someone who, like me, has a mind cluttered with useless D&D trivia.

Uhoh, Valeria is so ringing a bell here.... I don't have my old school books around, but for some reason I am thinking Basic/Expert Ruleset timeframe.

Rot Grubs still give me totally bizzare nightmares (Like the one with Tom Selleck... but that is for another time.). Are Rot Grubs not around in the morass of 3e monster books? There is definately a converted version in the old Wine Cellar of the 3e conversion of U1 - Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh that was on your original ENWorld before WotC cracked down with a strict conversion posting guideline. I have been running my PCs through a modified version of that series... hehe, the Rot Grubs got them good :D

P.S. On a whim I also had a funny feeling about the Tome of Horrors from Necromancer Games, and took a look in there, they also have a version as a CR4 Hazard. :D

I can't believe it took me so long to notice this. Honestly, I'm shocked, flabbergasted, and appalled. In a d20 market increasingly choked with minutia, where's my Complete Book of Green Slime? Must I write it myself?

If no one else will publish it for you, Mike, you know it will find a home with E.N.Publishing.

:D

Defenders of Faith has the spell Slime Wave which is a wave of green slime. It covers a 15' radius and does 1d6 temp Con damage per round to you if you fail a reflex. All but one of the PCs in my RttToEE failed their saves and they weren't very happy.
