Michele Carter's Big Playtest Post!

I am going to put my vote in for Hobgoblin for the mystery race, but I also remember reading the rumor when they first announced 4e that Changeling might be in the phb, but they also said the same about drow. But they never mentioned Hobgoblin or any of the other goblinoid races.

Plus, didn't Hobgoblin's get a Wisdom bonus to their racial stats in 3.x?
No. They get a bonus to Dex (not particularly useful for Clerics) and Con (useful to everyone).
Neither Changling nor Hobgoblin makes a better Cleric than usual, as far as I can see.

The wildest theory I have, is they could be some form of Rilmani. Much like how the Eladrin sort of have a demotion/promotion to a PC race, maybe the metallic humanoid outsiders of neutrality (shiny too, unless they're plumachs or the lead caste) have gotten the same thing done to them. Really if alignment is less important in 4e than it has been before, maybe it's because the Rilmani "won" in some way, and therefore alignment matters less.

Of course I still think that goblins, orcs, hobgoblins or kobolds are more likely.

Well, who would the Eladrin be displeased with? Well, they're a race of fey (or fey-derived creatures), right? What do fey dislike? Cold iron. So the mystery race must be somehow composed of cold iron. The likely candidate? Warforged. ;)

Warforged were confirmed to be in the MM1 but not the PHB1 already.

It's also likely that the Shadar-Kai could be the mystery race, as they are fey of shadowfell.

Now that I think about it, it is entirely possible it is a Gith race. They're devout, they've a strong Astral empire (according to canon) and would be an interesting race to import due to changes with the planes.

Hrm...

These really are not playtest reports. They are game summaries. I really don't care what happened in the game unless it pertains to the new mechanics. A playtest report tells me what problems were encountered due to mechanics, how the game flowed, what things worked well in the game and what might need to be changed or improved.

Obviously, the mystery race is Thri-kreen. :p

That would be a nice thing indeed, but I don't expect them until PHB2 and/or whenever psionics show up as a power source.

I miss my masochistic Thri-kreen psychic warrior; he was fun to play.

First with the "drow in the PHB" post.

Otherwise, sounds good.

While not impossible, I find the idea of an seafaring Drow surface empire to be highly unlikely. Though I suppose they could sail at night. "The Sun never rises on the Drow Empire." ;)
Hoping for lizardfolk, expecting hobgoblins.
