Wow, I like that. WoW has the draenei player characters starting in the aftermath of a crash, but it's in the eternal "now," not set back even a few weeks (which would make more sense).
Yeah, I've been screwing around with the Burning Crusade trial, and it's kind of hilarious how, two years from now, that Draenei starting area is still gonna be sitting there, with the crash of the Exodar still having just happened. There are a whole lot of ways in which MMORPG developers are still building their worlds and scenarios the same way they would for single-player games.

I'm playing it and enjoying it. It took me a little while to get over the "MMOisms" -- but that's just 'cause I hate MMOs. (I wouldn't have tried this one except I'm a M-E fan.) If you find a good group of RP types to hang out with and turn off the OOC chat, it's quite enjoyable.

It's not 100% kosher with the lore -- the uber-purists will still hate it the same way they hate MERP and the movies. But if you are willing to relax and accept that, say, hobbits might wander beyond the boundaries of the Shire, or that there are enormous flying bugs from time to time, you'll be all right.
