Midnight 2E rocks

Jeesh Banshee, nice job on summarizing! I am amazed you could read through the book so quickly. Perhaps you could cut and paste your post into the reviews section.

Well, I guess all of that memorizing of textbooks in university paid off somehow :)

I'm not sure if my summary could be counted as a full-fledged review or not. I'm still waiting for my own copy...supposedly it should be in Tuesday or Wednesday.

I want another look at those barter rules. I am somewhat disappointed by the increase in difficulty in using evocations, but will have to see how it plays out.

I didn't know if I liked the new change to Greater Evocation either, but I think it's for the best. Midnight, IMHO, shold not be a world of channelers throwing about fireballs and meteor storms. It's more about subtle magic, and reserving your most powerful spells for the final battle (then hitting the road before those astiraxes find you!)

Even if you wanted to offset that penalty (short of rule zeroing it) there are always charms and talismans that reduce costs of spell energy, and now nexuses can also act as spell energy batteries in the new edition.

If they've replaced the horrible paper with something better, used either B&W or full colour throughout, and somehow distinguished the product more strongly from being just 'another LotR', then I might be interested.

Well, 32 pages at the start in colour. The rest is black and white. Much better paper quality...it's more gloss, and less of that rough feel. As I mentioned, the setting feels more complete now, as well. Yes, it's still inspired by LotR, but now it's Midnight. A complete setting. It seems more internally consistent, more "grown up". The material is deeper, there's more info into the Shadow and its forces, about exactly what's going on, and how to run a game in the setting.

If I was sitting in a FLGS trying to decide on what to buy, and both books were in front of me, I'd go for the 2nd Ed. absolutely because it's just far more complete.

Banshee basically got it right when talking about this new edition. I finally got to pick it up today and I haven't put it down since.

The book really pulled in alot of disparate information and made things more uniform. It also explains alot of the core changes to the D&D game alot better than before.

The book itself is gorgeous. The paper quality is is much better and the binding feels like it could take quite a beating. If only my GURPS 4E Characters book were so tough...

This book definitely deserves a look if you are at all interested in dark fantasy.
