Midnight: First Impressions of Campaign Book

You know, I'm sitting here trying (and failing) to come up with something to say that won't sound totally fanboy.

And yet, I just have to express how much I love Midnight. I need to hunt down Crown of Shadows and look at it -- get a feel for the world through the first adventure written for it.

Covenant items and heroic paths do what all of my house rules could not; they return the power to the character, rather than turning them into a paper doll upon which the player hangs magical items.

I love this setting.

In time... all will fall under Shadow.

:D

Not this boyoh. I promise I'll take down the Shadow Kings swinging, with all the Scarred Lands might on my side. Everyone else can flock where they want. I'm staying true to the side that made me. Or I made it. Something made something. ;)

I have to say that Midnight was not even on my radar. Someone said it was Tolkein Lite, and I immediately dismissed the book. Hey, my gaming funds are seriously limited!

However, I started seeing more and more threads on it, all over the place. For the most part, the posters were excited by the setting, and it really showed. I started to get excited, so went actively looking for information.

Sites such as www.againsttheshadow.org (which links to both a Midnight forum and the Yahoo group, as well as a bunch of other stuff); reviews; posts here and there. These all got my blood boiling in a way I haven't felt since 3E first came out.

Then I read Paka's Midnight story hour. It is easy to read and was the absolute straw that broke the camel's back.

Supposedly my copy will arrive early next week, and I'm bouncing off the walls waiting for it :)

So, Will or Greg - are there plans for a gazetteer? :D

I hope so. I'm at the point now that I'd really like to have some more detail about some specific areas.

After Minions of Shadow, I haven't heard anything about what might come next.

I seem to be in the minority in that I don't want another book after Minions of Shadow. I'm not a fan of over-detailing a world. I feel like they've put out an adventure for up to 5th level and they've given us a well done player's guide with plot hooks for every race and class.

Anything else would be just too much for me. I like filling in the details on my own.

I agree, at least, to some degree.

I'd like a book with a bit more detail on the geography and cities. I'd also like a book detailing Izrador's forces. Maybe Minions of Shadow will have some of that.

Other than that, I'm good. I don't know what else I could ask for.

I definately don't want to see it get bogged down and overdetailed like the Realms.

2 more books.

Maybe a sequel to Crown of Shadow.

So... 3 books max.

Interesting concept... a world where you DON'T want more detail.

I'll have to check my bookstore that gets FFG books in. Maybe they'll have Midnight so I can flip through it a bit.

I'm not a fan of having every single piece of the game world spelled out. I like the areas on the map where it is fuzzy, that is where my adventures tend to happen.

I like tons of adventure seeds where I can grow them in any direction I want.

In a gaming book, I want to be inspired more than I want to be informed.
