I thought we were looking for a way to discuss different games and playstyles without using existing inflammatory labels. Popularity doesn't enter into that.

You have to draw the line somewhere in how much splitting you're going to do when talking about playstyles; otherwise yuu need distinct terms for every individual playstyle anyone can define, and I'm hard pressed to see that as workable.

That doesn't mean you only need to pay attention to the most popular ones, but you still probably need to at least start there, and show where a playstyle has come out of certain games, and I can see an argument for basing those on trends, and trends will always involve popularity to some degree.

I just think the "not a wave" styles deserve their own game examples.

After coffee I realized that.

Then name them.

That's likely why there lack a wave. They don't instantly invoke attachments to any genre.
Dfrpg is 100% Urban fantasy too. It's literally based on an urban fantasy book series and tounge in cheek is written to look like the characters from it made a ttrpg about their world

You really think so? None of those genres were unrecognizable to me. I'm not convinced they're as unknown as you suggest.
The genre are recognizable.

The games identified with them aren't

(Except for Urban which I ID WOD with first with Dark due to the anti tech natures of WOD kindred and werewolves).

Name a well known Mythic or War FRPG that caused a trend.
