Mind Blank vs Smite

I don't think that smiting evil is a positive energy effect, though.

Anyhow, there's no way to ward alignment-specific damage that I know of, but it might be a cool spell- alignment ward, which would suppress all magic with an alignment descriptor... I'd prolly make it a 4th or 5th level spell.

Another option: don't let them get close- use simulacra, projected image, or anything else you can think of to stay out of reach. Throw summoned beasties at the party and exhaust their resources. Greater dispel them, let them fight and buff again for a few rounds, and greater dispel again.

Make them exhaust resources coming to you.

Ahh, but if someone is using a flaming weapon, there's a way to defend against that - energy resistance.

If someone is using a holy weapon against you, how can you defend against that (short of not being hit)?

There's a special power you can add to magic armor that can do this in the Book of Vile Darkness. Named Darksoul Protection or somesuch. Don't have the book with me at the moment.

I'd never read that before. NICE! I've got a paladin who's going to get a rude shock sometime soon...

The biggest flaw with smite is...they have to hit. There's a plethora of spells that can help against that.

- Displacement or Greater Invisibility for the 50% miss chance.
- Any of the Bigby's hand spells to keep that annoying paladin at a distance.
- Moment of Prescience to get a +25 to your AC for that smite attack.
- Prismatic Sphere - have fun getting through that.
- Maze - no save...and most paladins have Int as their dump stat

Yeah, the BoVD armor is nice...half damage from the smite.

Actually, I'm the DM... and I've got an epic level paladin who will smack the tar out of the BBG. As I'd like the big battle to be a challenge, I figured I'd try and find a way for the BBG to temporarily negate that nasty Smite. Plus, the whole party has super-ultra-mega-holy weapons or Purified spells. Which means if BBG is evil (which he is... otherwise he wouldn't be the Bad guy!) then he will die a quick painful death.
You could give the BBG six levels of Horizon Walker with the planar terrain mastery, aligned (good). That will negate a smite ability as well as any other nasty things like Holy Word, Holy weapons, etc.
