Miniature Scale?

Thanks for the e-mail link, I'll send him a query ... and are you a big miniature guy yourself, by any chance? :)

I'm a big fan a minis and counters. I'm not sure how well D&D3E works without them for combat.

I collect them and paint them (in short bursts). Some of my stuff is on my message boards and I hope to add some more after the new year. Rather than have a whole site section devoted to them, I use my message boards (so you have to click the "see all posts" option since some have been there beyond thirty days.) :)

You can find them in my Miniatures/Scenery Discussion Forum

The one mini I could never find for my younger brother was an orc in medium/heavy armor (preferably oriental), with two battle axes.

That really surprised me too, as I thought that wouldn't be all too weird for an orc mini...

GW have Black Orc's which are in heavy armour and carry twin battleaxes. Unfortunately GW figures tend to be larger 30mm than most and there Orcs are even larger still.

Yeah, kinda a good size for Hobgoblins or small Ogre (Half-Ogres.) Nice figs, though. :)

I always liked these minis, but they do have fully armored heads. Check them out, but probably the best quick conversion involves trading a friend one of the cool armored heads for a handful of ordinary WHFB plastic Orc heads.

You get two Black Orcs to a blister pack too, so you can make an evil twin for your friend. (Or is that a "good twin" if its an Orc?)

GW Miniatures

I think GW Minis are probably the best around. They're great.

Check out www.newwavegames.com, if u live in the US, u can get up to 30% off GW minis and other companies minis, like Diablo: The rpg and lots of other scales.

Hey, thanks for the link (a lot!) Usually I try to find the best price online (books, electronic parts, etc) but for some reason didn't think to find one for mini's. 20% off for a dozen figs can save me a lot.

Just one more question - does anyone know of any sites which offer painted minis? No one in our group are hobbyists like that.

Sorry, other then em4 or Dwarven Forge.

Danger Danger Will Robinson!

Check around before you buy from NewWave, there are some serious horror stories about dealing with them. Particularly, they are accused of charging your card as soon as you order and then shipping only part of your order. And then being totally unavailable if you call them to ask why you haven't gotten your stuff yet. :-(

They never shafted me like that; as a matter of fact, they kept sending me free boxes of Blood Bowl that I never ordered. It took me weeks to get a hold of someone to retrieve the first box; I gave up on (and still posess) the second box. So its not as if I have a real axe to grind with these guys; I'm ahead on dealing with them. But there are a lot of people out there who weren't so lucky. Caveat Emptor.

Riffle through your FLGS's order book under d20 and hope for the best. I've seen painted mini sets at mine, though they're not inexpensive.

If you know someone who collects MageKnight (prepainted plastic mini's), ask him if he'll sell you his commons. They have the same paint job as the uncommons and rares, though MageKnight paint jobs are more in the "getting better" category than hand-painted ones. You can then cut off the mini's from the 1.5" click bases and mount them onto standard mini bases. Most MK mini's are humans, demi-humans, and constructs.

A lot of minis are 28mm scale. Also, at some point (in the eighties, IIRC) some companies began to measure minis in different ways, like from the top of the base to the top of the head, since not all bases are equally thick. So if you are combining some older minis with newer ones you may find that the older ones appear smaller. However, I think most 25mm and 28mm minis will work with one another fairly well, and I mix them with no regret. I do not mind having a nice range of heights in my humans and do not think anything under six foot tall should automatically be reserved for another race. The ones I have seen that are 30mm can always represent larger versions of their type, or in the case of sentient races, a people from lands where harsh conditions produce hardier stock, perhaps. :)

Is there a list of what 28mm lines anywhere? I bought a nice box set of lOTR figs from GW and come to find out they are true 25mm not 28mm like I had hoped
