Miniature Scale?

Caveat Emptor.

Oh, crap. Now I know why the name is somewhat familiar ... I heard those horror stories here. I'll be on the lookout for other online stores that offer the same huge discount, but if I can't find one I'll try my luck with New Wave (30% off ... drool).

Is there a list of what 28mm lines anywhere? I bought a nice box set of lOTR figs from GW and come to find out they are true 25mm not 28mm like I had hoped

I've never seen a list anywhere that specifically states hwo produces 25mm or 28mm minis, or( if they produce both) which are which. It might be a useful project for someone. My best advice would be to do a www.google.com search for minis and include the size parameters I.E. search by fantasy miniatures 25mm, fantasy miniatures 28mm or fantasy miniatures 30mm. I wish I could find the online information where an industry person had discussed the sizes and how they had blurred in certain instances. If you run across it, please post a link back here. Sorry I can't be more help at this time. :)

You might want to experiemnt with a very small order the first time to limit your risk. Heck, you can only paint miniatures so fast, so there's really not too big a hurry, right? I've read enough of the horror stories to not take any chances but Games Plus in Mt. Prospect IL has a huge selection of minis and I prefer to see what I am getting, for the most part.

Riffle through your FLGS's order book under d20 and hope for the best. I've seen painted mini sets at mine, though they're not inexpensive.

Cedric.
aka. Washu! ^O^

I found a 'professional' site which will paint models at various levels of quality, but I should have realized the prices were going to be high - $50+ for a single model at master level, frex.

I would like to, but the shipping cost is $9 which would negate any advantages I would receive from the discounted goods unless I ordered a significant amount; which truthfully I could easily do with the selection they have.

A couple of thoughts:

1st - I really encourage you to buy from your local game store if possible. They DO deserve your support.

2nd - Almost every town has a few guys who paint well and will do it for commission. Most of them have full time jobs and do not need to charge $50.00. I charge $12.00-$15.00 for what I consider a very good job - beats most "masterwork I see IMHO. Another good friend of mine who does do masterwork charges around $10.00 a figure - he just loves to paint.

So ask around, and find your local paint guy. Go to conventions and cruise around the miniature games. Find somebody who has decent looking figs. Ask who painted them and then ask if they do commission work.

PS - I am not soliciting, nor do I want to do any commissioned miniature painting at this time.

PSS - I echo others' warnings about New Wave - especially around this time of the year.

Not to harp on it further, but if you are going to take the risk, perhaps you can just order enough to offset the shipping costs (making it worth your while) but not ordering so much as to feel completely screwed if things go awry. I may have said too much already. :p

On a side note, to anyone who hasn't, I highly recommend signing up for the minis-painter Yahoo group-

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mini-painter/

Kent (Barendd Nobeard) turned me on to this list some time ago and it is an invaluable resource if you paint miniatures, IMO. :)

I say, do try and paint your own! After a little time and effort, and probably a couple figs, you can begin to paint fairly decently. You will also begin to pick up cutting and pasting skills. The dwarf with a halberd is a breeze with a little experience. You like gaming, you'll love mini's. Heck, I think I enjoy broken minis as much as my nice ones. I have taken figures broken at the torso, and a plastic lions body, and combined the two to make some awesome wemic type figures. Just try it.:D
