Minotaur characters

First Post
I don't own Savage Species, but I want to put Minotaurs in my homebrew campaign, based on the information at:

http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/dx20030202ex

I have a few questions:

How much experience does an 8th level minotaur have, and do they gain experience like standard characters? I've gotten conflicting views from the DMG, and paging through SS.

I'm starting a campaign with 9th level characters, and I'm allowing 9th level humans or dwarves. Would a starting Minotaur be Min8/Rgr1, for example?

Finally, I've read this sentence from the above link several times, and am still not clear on it's meaning:

"Because a gore is a natural attack, a minotaur can use the full attack action to attack with a melee weapon and follow up with its gore attack as a secondary attack at a -5 penalty. It does get iterative attacks (multiple attacks with the same weapon at a cumulative -5 penalty), if it is entitled to any, with its melee weapon (but not with its gore) when using such an attack routine."

Let's say a minotaur has a Huge great axe and has an attack of +13/+8. If they have a full round, can they make two ax attacks at +13 and +8, and then a gore attack at +8? +3??? Not at all, since they already had two attacks?

Thanks for your help.

Yeah, a minotaur 8/ ranger 1 is in all regards like a lvl9 human character.

You could even increase the minotaur levels further (it's his favoured class) for the good saves of the monstrous humanoids...

The minotaur monster class tops at 8 levels. It doesn't improve further. And minotaurs advance by character class. So AFAIK you have to take a class (the favored class means that you don't get XP penalties if you're minotaur8/rng1

Secondary Attacks with natural weapons are made witht he best attack bonus -5.

So you have Axe +13/+8 and Gore +8.

Wrong. Check out Savage Species, the minotaur description. They explicitely state that he could be advanced as minotaur.

I'd still go barbarian or something else, but it is an option.

You can also consider taking only part of the Minotaur levels. My players are likely to see a number of Minotaur6/ClassX NPCs in the future. That drops out the "Immune to Maze" (shucks) but keeps the large size.

Compare a Minotaur6/Barbarian3 to a Minotaur8/Barbarian1 ...

I think you are required to take all the minotaur levels before multiclassing

Wow, thanks for pointing that out, I totally missed it. Well, since I didn't want the Minotaurs to have that funky immune to maze thing I'll redefine them for my world, but that then becomes a new race effectively.

That is disappointing though. That means that an adolescent minotaur can't pick up a level of barbarian until he finishes being all grown up. So by the rules, no infant-savants.

I understand the desire to avoid min-max to some degree, but I'm not sure I like the limitation.
