Mirrormask

I saw the movie Mirrormask this past weekend. Absolutely wonderful. In the same vein as Labyrinth but far better. I recommend this to anyone that enjoys intelligent fantasy and beautiful sets and animation.

Yeah. I saw it two nights before the last Medford gameday. From what my friend said, they were trying to create a movie like labyrinth (which did poorly in theatres but still sells videos today) but with a much smaller budget.

It was quite enjoyable. Rather liked the mother/queen, but I'm used to her playing Irene from the Forsyte saga.

I really enjoyed Mirrormask as well. Very surreal, and a great story.

The sidekick (can't remember his name) was great. The part with him at the very end was neat.

My understanding was that it was originally supposed to be a sequel to Labyrinth... but by the time Gaiman finished writing, it wasn't :)

It's been out on dvd for months now. I got a Neverending Story sorta vibe from it. I love McKeen's work, so this was a given for me.

Oh wow, it looks like I'm gonna be in the minority here. I couldn't freakin' stand Mirrormask. I thought the acting was really weak, the dialogue was pretty suck-o, and the story felt like an afterthought just to tie together all the pretty pictures. I think I would have liked it a lot better if it was MAYBE half an hour long and just set to music rather than aspiring to be a full-length film. As it was, I was bored as hell between the "Hey, THAT looks kind of cool!" parts.

Hey, and quit usin' my sig, Tetsubo!

While I've read most of Gaiman's comics work and enjoyed it, I am NOT a fan of Dave McKean's wacky Sandman covers and occasional interior art, and this movie was pretty lame.

Unlike Labyrinth which was fantastical and fun, this movie was drab, dreary and boring.

Some of the images were pretty, but for the most part, it was more "abstract and weird for the sake of being abstract and weird" instead of serving a story purpose.

So I'm gonna side with Tewligan as saying this movie is pretty bad. And while I understand the obvious comparisons to Labyrinth, this movie has none of the FUN that Labyrinth had.
