Misunderstanding the Culture

I have a DM who consistently pronounces drow as 'dro' (rhymes with 'no' or 'show' instead of 'cow' or 'how').

I very stubbornly did the same thing until Col. P said otherwise on one of the Ask Gary threads here. I still think it sound cooler the incorrect way, but that's just me.

Yes, mispronunciations of "paladin" and the like are hilarious.

I can fess up to one, finally: I used to think that the Dragonlance character Kitiara's name was pronounced "kish-AH-ra".

Then I thought about the way Americans would pronounce it, and decided "KIT-ee-ah-ra" was more likely.

A friend in high school called Raistlin "RASS-lin", and ironically, he was a WWF fan . . .

And, everyone in my current group insists on saying 'chazm' instead of 'kazm' and 'PIE-tahn' instead of 'PEE-tahn'.

And I have just now found out that I've been mis-pronouncing that word since 1979...!

'tis on DVD. Has decent enough commentary. Got it two years ago for Christmas. Taunted endlessly by friends ever since.

Cool, I'll have to look for it then. I got mine on VHS years ago (more than ten, before high school), and it is the most watched video in my house. Star Wars special edition would be, but the tapes arent as old and havent been played that often yet.

I put krull on a couple of weeks ago, and was rather put out how jerky and fuzzy it was getting...

Another couple to add:

This is more of a misunderstand, but I once had a player ask me about "licks and throbs" while fighting werewolves. (I'd said 'lycanthropes')

And telling on myself:

First time through, I read "chaotic" as "shah-TOE-ic". (Apparently, I was dislexic, as well as being clueless.)

Also did "ethereal" as "ETH-ree-al".

I believe that would be psuedodragon, pronounced very, very badly.

Pseudodragon, almost certainly.

Oh, and I've heard it called "thay-ko" as well as "thah-ko", I've never known anybody to actually call it "tee, ahche, aye, see, oh" in everyday gaming in any group.

When I got my first version of D&D (the black basic D&D box set with the red dragon on the cover, from the early 90's), I thought the two ends of alignment were law and "chah-os" though.

please say it isn't so!!! I've always said "dro" and I'm pretty sure the group I game with says it the same way! I'll never be able to pronounce it like "cow"
