Misunderstanding the Culture

Reminds me of the "gazeebo" story... :D

The legend of Eric and the Dread Gazebo is more a story about a player with a poor vocabulary, rather than a player who doesn't understand RPG culture. But yes, there is a definite parallel there. :p

It is also the story of a GM (and a group of players) who, even though it is clear that Eric does not know the word 'gazebo', cannot think of any way to explain it to him other than to say over and over "Eric! Duh! Boy are you stupid! It's a gazebo!!!!!!!". Not 'summerhouse', not even 'building'. They cannot think of any other way to explain what Eric obviously doesn't understand but to say it over and over. It is a stupid story about a room-full of stupid and cruel people.

Which is probably why it makes me laugh so very, very much.

I would argue that if the people in the room are stupid, then they aren't being cruel, whereas if they're cruel, you can't call them stupid. I mean, they're either unable to think of any way to explain it (stupid), of they're enjoying their friend's stupidity so much they just want to prolong the entertainment (cruel).

I don't think I'd be able to resist the temptation, myself. But I am cruel.

Or is that stupid? :D
