Modern Games (Cops and reality)

So do you play in modern settings and has real world news ever made you stop?
I've dropped games because of real world conditions that mirrored the non-modern game. Alien was just too close to home for the pandemic.
I won't run any election based scenarios in Stargate for at least a couple months.

Alien was just too close to home . . .
You have my sympathy.

Well I consider myself lucky being a Canadian cause I got no problem with the police for the most part cause the RCMP don't murder people as far as I can tell. I wouldn't want to live in a world without law enforcement cause living in the real "Wild West" would be hella scary! I like not having to carry a gun and constantly worry that someone's gonna steal all my naughty word as soon as I leave the house! All thanks to, you know, Law Enforcement, and the Rule of Law in general. I also like not being worried that the local Lord is gonna kill me cause I looked at his wife the wrong way, also thanks to, you know, the Rule of Law, and Law Enforcement.

So nope, got no problem running or playing a game based around cops. Besides, I would run a game where the cops are, you know, good cops. And I would play a good cops in a game about cops.

That being said, if someone involved in the cop game I was participating in decided to be a bad cop...I would beat them with a shovel...and go to jail for assault, cause, you know, the Rule of Law, and Law Enforcement exist in my country and I am thankful for it!

So I was going through a friends shed and came across some old GURPS books - in particular GURPS Cops (which had players engage in police procedurals) and GURPS Special Ops (which has a section on counterterrorism missions). As we skimmed through we talked about the US elections and how a game of Cops might role out now.

Then we saw the Vienna news and grimly declared - damn I dont think playing these would be fun anymore.

About 20 years ago or so, we were playing a multi-year Dark*Matter Alternity game that involved aliens taking control of the US Government (the Sandmen, for those that know the setting), and the PC's working to undermine that alien control. . .

. . .and around October 2001, we let the game fizzle out, because playing secret agents trying to bring down government officials and destroy secret government buildings didn't seem anywhere near as cool after 9/11.

I am not normally a follower of Canadian politics, but a very cursory internet search would suggest that just maybe there are some news stories that you have missed over the last decade or so.
Probably not. Still a fan of the Rule of Law and Law Enforcement. Way way way better than not having it. I sure as hell wouldn't trade my more or less safe life in Canada for say, Syria.

There are alternatives to broken systems of modern policing AND lawless anarchy. It's a not a strictly binary option, and it's a false narrative to suggest that these are our only choices.

It is also false to assert policing is unfixable. When somebody has an effective honest police force, rejoice with them - and point to that force as a model to emulate.

I run procedurals all the time and prefer to run them when I only have two players.

However these are almost always cop or detective themed and we haven't run into any real world events that would effect the game. I also tend to avoid hot button political issues as my group is all ovber the map politically and I avoid sex crimes so as to keep things fun for all

Hunter or Adam 12 , Lethal weapon Law and Order the like not 24, SVU or Criminal Minds,
