I don't run very many games set in the now, but contemporary games might be set just a few years before now. My last Vampire campaign was set in San Francisco during the Obama administration and I certainly made use of contemporary issues like gentrification and the homeless problem. And while my general rule is that human problems aren't caused by the supernatural, I have no problem with vampires taking advantage of human misery to advance their own goals. In my campaign, the Camarilla used the housing problem to attack the Anarchs mortal power base. That nice apartment where your herd lives Mr. Anarch? I'm sorry, but it's just been purchased by a real estate magnate, it's scheduled for renovation, and when it opens your herd will have to go elsewhere because they won't be able to afford the rent.
