Moms who banned DnD

Ok maybe i'm being hard on the 80s, i did spend a good part of my youth in them but you lost me with being less materialistic. the 80s were the decade of greed and decadence. People were watching "WALL STREET" and listening to "Material Girl." The 70s would be a better example of being less materialistic

Um, yeah. The '80s were all about Wall Street, your future being so bright you had to wear shades, dressing for success, etc. etc.. The idea that they were a more optimistic, less materialistic time is boggling.

Well, maybe not less materialistic, but like you said, "future being so bright you had to wear shades". Sounds pretty optimistic to me.

The MTV/Hollywood version of the '80s was indeed like that. So what? I hate to break it to you, but TV and movies do not necessarily represent real life.

Also remember that it's a damn big world, and there are all kinds of people in it. Even when the media trends you point out were at their peak, the life of an average American bore little resemblance to that of the sterotypical 20-something yuppie cokehead Manhattanite.

Speaking of dressing for success, I loved Eighties fashions. The trousers were cut full enough in the thigh that I could get my muscular hams into pants that fit around the waist, and if I pulled the shoulder pads out I could get a jacket that fit across the shoulders without hanging in folds around my knees. And I really made some visual impact when blousons/bomber jackets with padded shoulders were 'in'.

And for some reason I haven't been able to get into 34"-waist pants since 1990. There are signs that the fashions are changing back, though. I bought four pairs of 36"-waist pants last week.

You go, Trainz! The 80s rock! I too spent my whole adolescence there, and I have a certain fond nostalgia for the time period. Sometimes I even miss the Soviets. sigh. I see no reason to assume the 80s were a Dark Age in any way. In many ways, they were less cynical and materialistic than today.

Yeah, and RPG's felt different too. I am not talking about the edition itself, but the mood among gamers. I remember when I started playing in College back in 1985...

Not to say that it was BETTER back then, but it was something different that was quite cool.

And to stay on topic, although SOME people had it hard, it wasn't harder to play then than now. IMHO.

Because I was there then and I am here now, and met a lot of gamers, and the amount of stupidity gamers had to deal with is about the same level as today.

I had a much different experience than a lot of you it seems. my mom was the person who actually introduced my brothers and I to D&D. However, one of my friends dad was really concerned about him and forbade him from playing, however he has recenlty relented as long as he stays away from the gods and devils and what not.
