(Mongoose) Licences and RPGs

Re: new secret game?

I'll put two $$'s that its James Bond or something like it.

Given that Monggose reps have said that it's SF, and that it's not a UK license (though I guess these days Bond's franchise might be owned in the US?), I doubt it is 007.

If it were B5, I'd be very happy. Ditto SG1. I believe that both would work better as D20 Modern games than D&D, so hopefully if it is one of them, that's the route Mongoose is planning.

And if is either, I'll have to start getting ready to bombard Mongoose with submissions. :)

Interesting news, congratulations.

I've heard a fair bit about the old Conan game and judging by that you've got quite a challenge on your hands!

I have also heard that there will be a new Conan movie coming out soon. If it's true, I'd recommend holding off until it's shown for two reasons. The first is that you'll be able to get on the fervour bandwagon which should increase sales significantly and second, there might be things in the movie which you could draw upon or which might conflict with your work. We all know how critical gamers can be of a product and I can see this hurting your sales if your book doesn't stack up to the latest movie.

These are just a layman's point of view, mind.

The other thing is that I think I might know who one of the applicants for that fourth position is. If so, I recommend you hire him. If only for the beer :)

P.S. Another thought... if you've got the license, that might enable you to swindle a deal so that you could see advanced screenings of the new movie... for research purposes of course :)

A lot of questions! Let's see what I can and cannot answer :)

Starwolf: Red Dwarf has already been snatched up and Dr Who rapidly went down hill for me when Berty Bassett made an appearence!

Rhombus: It does indeed feature vehicles. . .

Baraendur: You missed a few other companies too - Decipher simmediatly springs to mind. But yes, it is a rather high-priced licence. . .

Earthshadow: For us, D20 Modern is a very specific application - it can handle certain genres very well, but straight D20 can grant a great deal more freedom if you want to take the rules in certain directions - our new Mech game, for example, could never have been done with D20 Modern, as it needed the full flexibility of D20. The same applies to the game-that-still-cannot-be-mentioned. We always approach a new game with the belief that the rules should bend to fit the genre, _never_ the other way around. As we go into these new games, you are going to see the D20 System do things you never thought possible, so stay tuned!

Capellan: We will be taking submissions for Conan, Lone Wolf and the game-that-still-cannot-be-mentioned (really going to have to get an acronym for that - the GTSCBM seems a bit long). If anyone is interested in the former two, give us a shout around the middle of next year when the rules should be in place. For the GTSCBM, I am afraid you'll have to wait until we announce things.

It is sci-fi, it is both TV show and film - and if it were original, it probably would not be a licence :)

Fourecks: We are well aware of the forthcoming Conan film. At the moment I am trying to stop certain staff members trying to swindle their way on to the set!!!

Well...that cuts down the possibility heaps...and killed my hopes for B5, unless you count the B5 movies as 'films' ;)

Stargate seems to be the only one that springs to mind. Well, there is the X-Files.

Hmmm....

Sci Fi... non-UK... both TV series and film...

Off hand, I can think of:

Stargate SG-1
Dune (There was a miniseries based off Dune, remember)
X-Files (But this isn't really a sci-fi series...)
Star Trek

Now, X-Files I'm fairy sure isn't it... Star Trek is currently held by Decipher, I believe... And the Herbert estate is really stingy with the Dune licsense...

I'll guess Stargate SG-1, though it could still be Dune I suppose...

Note that he didn't say that it was based on books too... which Dune is...

And Stargate SG-1 would have use for some computer artists...

On the other hand, all he really said was that it wasn't UK based... it could be, say, Japanese based... But Guardians of Order has the anime market pretty much in a headlock...

I just don't see the game potential there, really.

If you're thinking of the show, then I can relate, none at all.

But if you're thinking of the movie, that took itself seriously enough that there is as much potential there as any open-ended higher-budget sci-fi movie.

Me, I'm thinking Stargate, too. Hey Matt, doncha just hate people who won't stop guessing, when you can't say Yes or No? :P
