Mongose: Quintessential Fighter

Hi guys,

Ranger REG: This view point is something we are very much aware of. So we have taken steps :) Whilst the Quintessential books have several authors, each follows are very strict format - the Character Concept, Tricks of the Trade, and several other chapters are common to each book, and appear every time, thus ensuring internal consistency across the range. We also write each book with an eye towards other classes using them - in The Quintessential Fighter, you will see some fighting styles, for example, that are decidedly Rogue-like. In the Quintessential Cleric, every one can benefit from Divine Favour. HOwever, the featured class does tend to do things better.

Cyber: Download problems are a new one on me for our site. If you drop me a mail in private, I'll see if I cannot sort you out.

Bramadan: The Encyclopaedia Arcane series focuses on what wiazrds can _do_. The Quintessential Wizard will cover more of what they _are_. If that makes sense!

Nightfall: The Cities series continues apace. Skraag is due back from the printers within days, and Stormhaven is going through editing now. In addition, we have just commissioned a third city that combines gnomes and certain reptiles in a very strange fashion!

To the rules lawyers at Mongoose (or here for that matter)

New fighter feat "Distract" - At first, I found this feat to be pretty cool. A bit powerful, but not overly so. Then I began to think about it, and am wondering how this effects spellcasters. Assume a fighter with this feat charges a wizard and then uses Distract.

I need some examples of this feat works with wizards/clerics, multiple opponents, multi-pcs against one opponent, and anything else that might require more explanation.

Thanks,

Gnoll city eh?

Well it couldn't come sooner! I always felt gnolls had been left out in the cold. Now with a city, I think that might change. :)

I haven't picked up the book yet but what I hear sounds promising. Any chance of the Barbarians books soon? they always seem to be last (in 1e had to wait until Unearthed Arcana, in 2e it was one of the last Complete books, and now in 3e Masters of the Wild is the last again) Please don't keep up this trend:D . I would buy the Quintessential Barbarian book as soon as it hit my local bookstore.

I too just picked up this book. Overall I am glad as it seems to contain quite a bit of material.

The Character Concepts where very interesting and except in a few cases seemed to not be unbalanced.

The Prestige Classes are all the shorter 5 level style. I like these as they tend to add flavor to the character rather then become the character.

The Feats although interesting have some odd restrictions and requirements. I believe there is a few cases of mechanicitis here.

The Weapons and Armor for the most part are nothing exciting.

OMCS looks very interesting and I will try it out more later.

As for the Fighting Styles, not in my game as they are now written. I am thinking of using them as feats, but it will require some thought.

I don't have the book yet, but why aren't you allowing the fighting styles? this part of the book seems to be the biggest controversy and I'm curious how people see them. I just hope the book arrives at a store near me this week so I can see this all for myself.

Basically, the styles have 5 levels. To get a certain level, you need the prerequisite feats, and then you need to be trained in the style of the school (usually costing you money and time).

The sticking point for me and a lot of other people comes in the fact that the benefits you get for this are roughly equal to a feat in most cases. It kind of bothers me that two fighters can be so unequal in ability (several feats worth!) simply by one spending money and time.

(To be honest, WOTC's own Oriental Adventures had the same problem with its martial art styles - I didn't care for it there, either...)

Anyway, if you decide you don't like them as is, they seem incredibly easy to just adapt to specialized feats, so they're well worth the pages they are printed on.

I should have been a little more clear. For right now I am not comfortable that they will not unbalance the game. After some further reading and maybe some testing I might change my mind. Just not now.

As for why, I think that drnuncheon put it very well. I see this as a way for fighters to get a few more feats without paying with feat slots. I may feel different later on.
