Monkey Grip

I'd have to go with the 3E version of Monkey Grip, then. You could pick up an oversized item and use it as a weapon. You could even pick up a person and use him as a weapon (he would probably have a problem with this.)

Remember, the Sword and Fist feat was weapon-specific. You didn't take the Monkey Grip feat; you took the Monkey Grip (Greatsword) feat, or the Monkey Grip (Longspear) feat.

If you want to use the 3E version of the feat to swing a bench as an improvised weapon, you'd need to take the Monkey Grip (bench) feat.

Monkey Grip only gives you one size larger.
This is subject to some interpretation. By a strict, literal interpretation of RAW, yes you are correct. However, writer's intent could be that monkey grip could be beneficial for even larger weapons. It uses the same text as powerful build, and the 3.5 FAQ says this about powerful build:
"The powerful build racial trait (found in the
goliath entry in Races of Stone and the half-giant entry in
Expanded Psionics Handbook) spells out exactly when the
character is treated as one size larger than normal:
...
3) When determining what size of weapons the character
can use."

This could very well be the intent of the rule, and could be used to justify such an interpretation in your own game (please ignore if you don't like the FAQ or this information. Seriously)

For most characters, Power Attack is better in every way.
That is because Wotc overcompensated power attack in 3.5 . Making anything that offers a better trade off than +2 damage for -1 to hit is going to be even more breakable.

Just hope that he never notices he'd be doing more damage by power attacking for 2 instead of wielding the large weapon... ^_^ It's only mechanically good if you use a bastard sword/maul etc...

Heh, I'm hoping he doesn't read this thread. I don't need him realizing that for down the road.
