Monkey Grip

Hey there, Forsaken One. :)

Does anyone else have pics of characters with monkey grip?

There's an anime (and manga) called Berserk. The main character is pretty much a textbook example of someone with the Monkey Grip feat. He uses a sword so big that most regular folks boggle at its size, and he's quite strong as a result of training his balls off in order to be able to use said big sword.

*nod* Good show, too.

Monkey grip, large bastard sword, then Melee Weapon Mastery to use that specilization with a large greatsword, that 'Heavy Weapon' weapon alteration to the greatsword, finally find some way to wield a wield a greatsword one handed.

A question of reach....

By using a Large Sized 2H sword would you have a 10' reach? Also, by using a Large sized Glaive, would you have a 20' reach?

If you polymorphed a small size person into a huge sized creature, could they then use a Gargantuate Sized Glaive for a 40' reach?

40' reach > +4 damage

Problems of magnification get magnified when magnified. Base damage on the Gargantuate Glaive - 6d6 (I think - get's kind of goody for 3d8 going up a size category)

No on both counts.

Not gaining any reach when using such large weapons is just as believable and reasonable as the ability to use such large weapons in the first place. :]

My suspicion is that "absurdly enormous sword" is an entire sub-genre of manga / anime; I feel like I've seen it so many times I've lost count. Maybe the authors are compensating for something. ;)

Tip:
It is sometimes reasonable to allow someone to wield an oversized weapon as an improvised reach weapon. Example: a medium human might want to use an giant's greatsword as an improvised longspear or polearm. It wouldn't do much damage, and would be at -4 to hit, but it would have reach.

If we went with the Tarzan approach (supernatural strength throughout the body) then I would allow a 10 foot reach for weapons sized for Large creatures, if we were talking about long swords, maces, flails, or other melee weapons of that sort. Greatswords would also have the 10 foot reach. Spiked Chains with their 10 foot reach (?) would now reach 15 feet.
However, daggers, spiked gauntlets, and the like would still only have their normal 5 foot reach.
That is, an 8 foot long sword or a 12 foot greatsword would have the 10 foot reach. The 3 foot dagger would not.

This increases the power of the Monkey Grip Feat. Now, all you have to do is explain (in roleplaying terms) why your character has this feat.
If you're willing to spend time (the most precious commodity of all) designing a character with Monkey Grip that is half reasonable, then by all means take the feat!

Letting someone with big build & big weapon strike with reach as a standard action without penalty seems more reasonable to me.
