monkey gripped reach weapon with tower shield

if i monkey grip a longspear and use it with one hand, plus i have a tower shield in my off hand...does the opponent get the cover bonus to his AC if i attack him and he's 10 ft. away instead of 5? i'm trying to think of the best way to make a phalanx type infantryman...

Yes.
There is a feat that allows people using L. Shields in a row to get a cover bonus to AC.

Can't remember where I saw it though..

It was in one of the FRCS books. Lords Of Darkness, IIRC. And cover applies whether you use a melee weapon, a reach weapon, or a ranged weapon.

The line isn't in the SRD, but in the PHB under "Cover", there's a sentence that says something like "However, with ranged weapons, it's easy to have better cover than your opponent - indeed, that's the whole point of arrowslits", or something like that... could someone with a PHB handy post the wording?

I want to say p134, but I'm not sure
