How do you run monster healing. e.g the players are beaten off after a tough fight, monsters get a long or even a short rest before the players return, do they regain HP.

Currently I am ruling they full heal on a long rest as the players do, are there any rules? What do you do?
This assumes nothing about healing in the stat block casters cld obviously regain spells etc.

I do full hit point recovery and half hit dice recovery as per the rules for resting.

Monsters have hit dice, I see no reason not to let them use them if the party's actions give them the opportunity for a short rest. I also see no reason not to give monsters the standard benefit of a long rest if they find the opportunity to take one.

Theoretically monsters have the same hit dice and rest rules as the adventurers. (I'm using a variant where the long rest returns your used-up hit dice but restores no actual hit points)

In practice the monster that survives first contact with the adventurers is incredibly rare - not letting it heal up when the adventurers do would be incredibly unfair.

I agree with some exceptions. Short rest HD healing, and overnight healing by default.

I'd modify how this applies for certain corporeal undead and constructs.

Monsters regen just like players do. They can use their HD over a short rest and they can regain all HP over a long rest. Also like players, they're typically better prepared next time.
