I am pretty sure that is suposed to be a psudonatural Balor. It has the proper equipment to be the balor and the Alien look is exaxtly the sort of thing the psudonatural template gives.

I don't know about that. The psudonatural template is all about chaos and a lot about lack of symmetry of any kind. Basically, it's all about the freakiness, and what's on the cover of T&B doesn't look crazy freaky.

I always thought so too...

That was my thought too - especially now that we have examples of "Far Realm" things in various books - they do look quite symmetrical and orderly.

Of course, that is my second-least favourite cover of a bad line of books, I disliked the Faith cover more. So YMMV.

Mixed feelings. I like a lot of the new art, especially the outsiders. Not the new giants, nice though it is to see them all. The new picture just doesn't look like it belongs on the same page to me, but, ah, well. On the other hand, I don't like their replacements. I liked the titan picture in the 3.0 MM, and the old dryad picture was probably my favorite in the book. This one is just... blagh. Bearable, though, and I'm so very glad they changed the vampire picture...

Oh, one more note. Did anyone else notice that a lot of monsters look more "evil" than they used to? The pseudodragon and satyr sprung out of me - the pseudodragon looks positively vicious, which doesn't at all fit, and the satyr looks more fiendish to me than anything. [Sigh.] I miss DiTerlizzi.

To each their own, I suppose. I certainly don't -- give me Lockwood, Wood and Reynolds anyday.

Do you think that anyone will be distressed by the appearance of the Succubus's breasts? Well, if they are then they need only look at the breasts of the Nalfeshnee to see that gender equality is alive and well, even in the D&D Universe!!!

Of course... I'm just guessing that the Nalfeshnee is a male...

I also am *very* glad that more pics of the Demons and Devils are included. After all, in the 3.0 MM, there are 11 each of Demons and Devils and only illustrations for 4 of each type. I also would've liked for them to have their own illustration and not standing in a crowd, but...ah well...I'll settle for each Demon or Devil having a pic, if they do have each one represented (I hope).

The reason I like them free-standing, is that I almost always present a full page illustration of the monster that the party goes up against. I scan the pic from the MM (or module, if it's a custom monster or specific scene), then I edit out all the annoying lines (do they still have those lines in the 3.5 books?), then print them out with a photo printer. Sometimes I have to do quite a bit of editing, and a good example here is the Hound Archon (3.0 MM). I esentially liberated it from the Planetar standing next to it. I think I did a pretty good job, though some parts look edgy. If the Hound Archon had been standing by itself, it would've saved me a half hour's work. It was fun in it's own way though. On a side note, I do prefer the look of the Hound Archon and Planetar from the 3.0 MM.

The Vampires look much cooler, and the Lich is great!

Much, MUCH better, thought the nymph looks more like a nereid and they didn't change the Elf???? WTF!?!?

Still very sweet all around.

I have no idea why, but I want to do an indepth rundown, so here goes... Feel free to skip over the boring parts.

Angels- Nice pic, can't see why Monte's so bothered by the name... I mean, a deva is still a deva and a baatezu a baatezu regardless of what some backwater Prime chooses to call them.

Archons- Okay. The trumpet archon looks a bit too much like the 3e planetar, though.

Abyssal 'lisk- Ooooh, creepy. Nicely sinister looking.

Blink Dog- They took out the old illustration to give us THIS?

Balor/Marilith- It's been discussed to death already. No comment.

Demons/Devils- Nice. It's kinda cool, also, that we finally have pictures of all of them.. I thought they weren't allowed to show bare female nipples, though?

Kyton- Back to being called a chain devil, I see.

Digester- Why in the world is this lousy picture STILL HERE?

Displacer Beast- See digester. If it had a build like a greyhound, that would be one thing, but this is just ridiculously emaciated.

Dragons- They kept Lockwood's art, thank goodness. Now if they'd just let him give the gem dragons a decent-looking makeover for 3.5e, I'll be happy.

Dryad- Reminds me a little of the Shanodin dryads in Magic, like she's physically part of the tree. A nice touch. Again with the nipples, though.

Eladrin- Eh. Could be better, could be worse.

Ettercap- MUCH better this time around.

Efreeti- See digester above. Blecch.

Giants- Again, eh.. I thought that this was by the same artist who did the Eladrin, but it actually isn't. Whatever.

Githzerai/Githyanki- YES! Gith in the Monster Manual! And it's the GOOD art from the PsiHB, too! Thank you WotC, thank you! And Enceladus, I'll kind of agree with you, but since I'm a girl, I'll go with the githzerai. They're less psychotic, anyway.

Guardinals- Hey, it's an avoral picture! I've been looking for one.. Leonal looks a lot better than the previous one, IMO, but I wish they'd included ALL the guardinals.... with new, better pictures for the lupinal and cervidal.

Halfbreeds- Funny, the halfdragon looks a little fiendish, and the half-fiend looks mildly draconic.

Green Hag, Harpy- See digester, above. Although they're a little better, because unlike the digester, even though the picture sucks, the monster doesn't.

Inevitable- I miss my modrons.

Kuo-Toa- See digester above.. I've never really seen the point of having both these and sahuagin, personally.... why can't we just have ONE race of evil fishmen and be done with it?

Drow, Ghost- Oops, missed a few. Pretty good, especially the ghosts. THey look eerie without looking viscious.

Lycanthropes- I preferred DiTerlizzi's from 2nd, but these are okay.

Magmin- An improvement, it looks mildy insane rather than deformed.

Mimic- It would be nice, just ONCE to see a picture of one looking like anything but a treasure chest....

Mind Flayer Sorcerer- Oooh, nice... Looks a little more like a psion to me, but the more illithids, the better. I wonder why this warrented a separate picture...? Hmm..

Mummy Lord- Better than the regular mummy, deservedly.

Night hag- See green hag. Yecch. What is it with all the badly drawn anorexic monsters lately?

Nightwalker- Okay, it's still the same as before, but it's still freaking cool-looking.

Nymph- Has a fey, exotic, aloof look.. I like it.

Ogre Mage- I'm glad for the picture, but aren't they supposed to be oriental looking? He looks like someone crossbred a smurf and a bugbear.

Planetouched- Couldn't they have kept DiTerlizzi's art? The aasimar looks... dippy... especially with that silly swan shield, and the tiefling looks sinister and evil rather than kind of alluring in a dangerous way... Bugger.

Pseudodragon- Nice to have a picture this time around, but even more than the tiefling, this looks WAY too evil for what it's supposed to be. The skull was definitely a bad idea for this picture... I think someone forgot to tell Mr. Reynolds that pseudodragons are supposed to be GOOD.

Satyr- Suffers from the same problem as the pseudodragon, although not as badly.

Slaad- Okay, then....

Sprites- See digester. Never much liked them, anyway, though.

Treant- Hey, they kept some DiTerlizzi art!

Vampire Spawn- I'm glad he's been demoted. The whole drooling blood thing didn't exactly fit the whole "I'm so elegant and evil" vampre image.

And that's all for now.
