D&D (2024) Monster manual Fey video up

I already have changed. I'm not playing or running any D&D. Mainly because 5e was a great system but it has some long term issues that bother me that they decided not to address. This is one of them, though fairly low on my list. High level play, and requiring a large number of encounters per day well above how most DMs run to balance casters and non-casters are my top issues.

That doesn't mean I'm not allowed to have criticism of a known problem that they decided not to address.
I must say I don't get the point of complaining about something for 10 years when you can change it yourself in year 1 and have 9 years of happy gaming instead. We made our house rules for 5e in mostly the first year and have had enjoyed more than any edition (or RPG we have tried) since. Do what works for you and complain less is my moto!

Please, if it's that straightforward, can you share proposed house rules for the three that you are responding to?

1. High Level Play
2. Balance casters and non-casters with only 1-3 encounters per day (in each tier of play)
3. Make all races more powerful so that there is more design space for interesting outliers (large centaurs, non-humanoids, permanent flight) with them being balanced against the other races so they don't feel OP.

Again, without having to do major rework, because at that point it's easier just to switch to another system -- which I have.

Or is what you are proposing far too large set of house rules and customization that it would never be worth it over switching to another RPG? I'd love if you were right, please wow me.

I have shared my house rules on these forums several times. I'm working and will not post them now, but might later.

However, regarding your issues:
  1. I have no issues with high level play. The only thing I would do is revise monsters, but I do that for all levels of play. That is not part of our house rules. It is possible that some of our house rules (death at 0 BHP) affect high level play though.
  2. We typically fall in that 1-3 encounters per day and have had no issues with martial and caster balance. No house rule needed for us. It is possible some of house rules do affect this dynamic (allowing HD to be spent in different ways, like recharging short and long rest abilities).
  3. I am not exactly sure what you are asking here. However, balance is not my primary concern when helping a player design a species they want to play. I have had players be giants, unicorns, dragons, etc. I tell my players" pick any sapient creature in the MM and we can make it work." I've done this for every edition and don't see it as specific 5e issue. It is not part of my house rule document as it is a case by case basis. I am not looking for balanced species creation rules.

My house rules are about 1 page. I think switching to another RPG is just fine. I don't see that as a problem. Do what works for you.

Yeah. The art is really important to them. And to a lot if 5.5's fans too, apparently.
Look I appreciate where you're coming from in a general sense. I also have no intention of buying into the new update and find that A5E and TOTV and homebrew stuff fulfill my needs. But this kind of snide aside that suggests those who like the new books are just dumb rubes enamored of pretty art is really unwarranted.

Gotcha. It's very easy to handwave away "just houserule" when you can't see a problem. However, as I did see problems, and pointed out specific problems in the new non-humanoids which you just danced around of "balance not being a primary concern", I can see that you don't actually understand any of my issues and your advice to just houserule it was based on assumptions that just aren't applicable.

So thank you for the thought, but to solve the issues to my content would have been a rather large undertaking even before playtesting them for issues, and switching to an RPG that doesn't have those issues works better for me.

That's fine. I never set out to solve your problems (how could I - I didn't know them 9 years ago). I didn't mean to suggest I had answers to your problems either, that was my mistake if I unintentionally insinuated that.

I am only ever trying to solve the problems my group has. We were able to do that in 1 page. If you can't do that, then by all means move on. I will still suggest you stop complaining about it like it is everyone's problem. I only suggest this as I think it is better for you to stop complain and simply enjoy something else. It is no skin off my back either way.

Just send me my MM already!
Thats exactly how I feel. I only watched parts of a few videos over the last couple months for the 5E2024 revision previews. At 30-60 mins each it's just too long over multiple videos per book. I have a hard time watching these guys for any more than a few minutes personally. I'd much prefer a generalized list of bullet points and some preview pictures than having to sit through 30+ mins to watch something I could read in 5 mins.
