Monster Manual III "In the Works"

Please, WotC, don't let MMIII suck as much as MMII did'; let the Fiend Folio be your guide to a monster book done well. Please follow your own design guidelines (and that includes, inter alia, using even-numbered ability adjustments for templates). And, please, please, please, if you must lower art costs, use B&W from a decent amateur rather than colour from crappy professional. Heck, just contract out the artwork to FFG: they consistently have excellent art.

Not with you on this. IMO, in terms of additions of quality monsters to the game, MM was exceptionally poor quality (yes, it had many staples, but the new additions and the overall selection were poor from a "do I want this thing in my game" level IMO), whereas MMII and Fiend Folio both rocked. Everyone's got an opinion though...

While I thought FF was better than MM2, I still really like MM2, and ave used almost as many monsters from it as any other monster book i own!

Revised FR creatures will appear in an early 2005 product (my guess? Creatures of Faerun), not in MMIII. Looks like we're reduced to one FR rulebook and one FR flavorbook per year from now on.

Just curious whereas you got your info on the revised FR creatures? I ask because they just gave us update guidelines for them in the web enhancement for the Player's Guide to Faerun. (Though this update makes some omissions to some of the monsters that are, IMHO, rather glaring).

Ehh, more monsters.

So what?

I haven't used all the one's I have yet.

Then again, that's because many of them (Phantom Fungus, anyone?) are just too silly for me to use in my campaigns.

I am with you on this. None of my fellow players enjoy weirdos very much: the occasional creepy junk creature is ok, but not one after the other. We want creatures that evoke something in the player's mind, and since most of us are not veteran gamers, this means monsters from common literature. Monster Manual I has a lot of them from many different sources (greek/roman epics, western/celtic, tolkienensque, gothic/horror and more), but Monster Manual II and Fiend Folio had very few.

The tendence is IMHO also to become repetitive and just mix-mash abilities from previous monsters, or simply try to fill the gap in CRs for a monster's type with a creature which is nothing very new except a beef-up of abilities.

These 2 are what I would like from the game's monsters: 1) to be evocative and 2) to introduce different challenges. So far only Monster Manual I has really satisfied me on both.

Rich Baker mentioned it in the "Ask the authors" thread:

THANK GOD!!! There is such a thing as TOO MUCH. This will actually let me get caught up. I couldn't help but notice that their are reissuing a D&D Basic Set. Anyone know if it is just going to be the Adventure Game repackaged or is it going to harken back to the red boxed set?

According to Gamingreport, Wizards will be releasing a Monster Manual III in September, which is where I guess the reworks of the FR monsters cut from PGTF will appear.

i can actually confirm that i heard this rumor last year at Gen Con. but it will also include many new monsters as well.
