Monsters in the MM3 (and other upcoming books)

This actually looks very cool, but I wish they ccould at least theme them slighlty, rather then throwing left over monsters into a book. Yet it still looks cool.

One could argue for both the MM2 and the FF to be slightly themed - the MM2 to high-CR monsters, and the FF to planar creatures. Maybe there is a minor theme in the MM3?

That would be most unfortunate, if that is the case, since it is a "core" monster book. It should have been more appropriately titled Monsters of Eberron if that is the case.

Of course, I wouldn't be surprised, since WOTC's main focus these days seems to be marketing Eberron above all else.

It's just as likely that the theme is Forgotten Realms. :p

That said, you might be closer than you think. As far as I know, every of the three finalists of the setting search was involved in the Monster Manual III (Rich "Giant in the Playground" Burlew certainly is), and as such, the theme might be related to campaign settings.

By the way, Dragon #323 also mentions the grisgol, hangman golem, mud golem and splinterwaif.

Or perhaps the theme is Dragon Magazine monsters.

Golem, Alchemical (#302)
Golem, Mud (#302)
Golem, Web (#302)
Splinterwaif (#307)

Actually, I don't think a hangman golem has appeared in any offical product. However, there is one in the Creature Collection 3, so maybe they included as part of the d20 license (like they did with a couple of critters in the MM2).

I'd like to think so, but Andy Collins said that there is no OGC in the upcoming books that he is aware of.

Then again, he said a similar thing before Unearthed Arcana was announced. ;)
