"monte cook or someone" spring attack at 10 feet?

Hey Everyone,

I'm not sure if it was Monte Cook or not who created this rule, but my DM said he is going to use a variant rule for spring attack which forces the character move 10 feet in order to gain the benefits of spring attack.

Does anyone know where I can find this variant rule?

I have not been able to find it on the Monte Cook website, but I think the rule may have came from him or from another designer of the DnD game.

Thanks!

I don't know where it is exactly, but IIRC the variant rule for spring attack was a minimum of 10 feet before and 10 feet after the attack. My own take is that you must move before and after the attack to benefit from the feet. I would not enforce a 10 foot minimum, 5 feet will do.

Actually it was a house rule done by Monte Cook. During Part Two of Monte's interview with Morrus the question of spring attack came up and Monte explained his rule. You have to move at least 10 feet before your attack. Morrus had stated as well that he uses the same house rule.

Here is the link for the converstaion: http://www.d20reviews.com/interviews/montechat2.htm
It's near the very ed of the converstaion.

From the May 2002 Interview with Monte Cook
Morrus: Oh, just one more - Masked: Monte, how did you tweak spring attack, I've been having a little difficulty with it in my game.

Monte: Mostly, I impose a movement minimum of 10 feet at the beginning and end of the attack. So you can't just be in melee and say you're spring attacking when you're obviously not. That's the big change.

Morrus: Hey - I do that too!

Monte: Cool.

Kind of a silly rule IMO... A move is a move, whether it be 5', 10' or 30'... The only reason I could see enforcing a 10' minimum movement is for "charge" like attacks where you need to build up speed and distance to strike. Spring Attack isn't like that at all. Oh well, to each his own I suppose.

::scratching head::

If you move less than ten feet, wouldn't it almost always be a 5'-step? Unless you're trying to move 5', and saying it's part of a spring attack AND a 5'-step. That's all the houserule would stop, as far as I can see.

I wouldn't require 10' - but I would require movement before and after - else it's not really a "spring" attack, is it?

The feat can be read either way from its own language as can be shown by previous debates on the topic.

The asked where to find Monte Cook's version of the feat.

I for one dislike the feat with a passion, cause the way I veiw Spring Attack is differ than a player in my group and he abuses it with a passion. He has power attack, but he'll use Spring Attack, on any little fight, from Goblins to Dragons. He has power attack, but doesn't use it. This guy we call Vanillia cause he can't role play, he just wants to kill. No heart no emotion. The way I view Spring Attack, since I play a barbarian, I would use it to protect the wizard of our party, if I figure a charge is coming, I would ready Spring Attack if I am closer to the wizard than the attacker, so I can jump in between and try to break the charge. Of course, others will see it differently. I thought the Yoda fight with Dooku sucked, and everyone else loves it. Go figure. I also believe Whirlwind attack should be one attack, since to me it's a drastic and desparte move. Again, go figure.
