And of course since Boston is just as dangerous as Afghanistan your point...

Wait, what was your point again?

Boston isn't as dangerous as Afghanistan. It's just as dangerous as, say, Manhattan, London, or Madrid. Or the Tokyo subway for that matter. Hey, it's just some rolled up newspaper. Just pick it up. It's not like someone would have some kind of poisonous chemicals like sarin in it. That would be silly.

Right, you make a good point.

What if it WAS Sarin?

Why didn't the police treat it that way?

Or treat it like a nuke?

Why not evacuate the city?

For that matter, why NOT treat downtown Boston like Afghanistan. I mean, on a day like 9-11 or during the Tokyo subway attacks those cities were terribly dangeros right?

Why not let police patrol the streets in APCs with automatic weapons.

Oh I know why. Because that would be poor judgement.

Just like treating ALL the devices like bombs 12 hours after you've destroyed the first one.

You may be surprised to hear it, but I certainly think city government overreacted. It'll be interesting to see the chain-of-action analysis once things relax and get sorted out. Of course, I also think the whole situation shouldn't have happened in the first place -- as far as I can tell, the lack of good judgment was pretty much ubiquitous, and so far no one is showing up smelling like roses.

If you don't mind a few questions since you live in Boston...

How popular are the top members of the city government? Like the Mayor and the City Council? I'm wondering if part of the reaction by City government wasn't an attempt to make themselves appear efficient and effective. (Mind you, I fully believe that the police and bomb squad guys acted totally appropriately here, but they also most follow the orders of the Mayor.)

I'm also getting conflicting reports from news agencies about how many bomb threats were actually called in. If there were multiple calls, like a couple of reports I've heard on the radio said, then this could have been a bomb prank played by a group who are not associated with Interference, Inc. at all and just was using the ads as a convenient "McGuffin" for their bomb threat prank. That may be reaching a bit, but without knowing the chain of events, it may be possible.

The Mayor of Boston is one of the least articulate men in the history of time.

His nickname is Mumbles.

That should tell you everything you need to know about the way the city is run. That and the fact that their largest public works project was a corrupt debacle that sucked needed highway money away from the rest of the state.

Edit: As someone who lives in the western part of the state, what I have seen of Boston city officials since 9-11 is that they are hell bent to overreact to EVERYTHING. They feel they were raked over the coals for what happened at Logan airport by the 9-11 Commission and other reports of the events of that day.

So now they seem determined to jump at every shadow. Every hint of wrong-doing. As someone pointed out earlier (Tacky maybe?) they arrested all sorts of people during the convention and tried to charge them with anything they could think of.

Because it wasn't leaking poisonous gas would be my guess. :\

Or treat it like a nuke?

Because nukes aren't that small and that would be idiotic.

Yes, it would be. And, I'm guessing that that's why no one ever suggested such a thing.

I'm not sure how many times you need to be reminded to avoid politics, but I guess it's one time more than we've reminded you so far. I invite you to grind your axe at Circvs Maximvs, where there's a thread open on this topic, but this isn't the place for it.
