More D&D Miniature Pictures

I've seen this posted a lot, the round base versus square bases thing. Just because the base is round doesn't mean it will not fit in a square grid. And what of us that use hex grids? How do square bases fit in that? The concept of facing is important, and many models on a square base end up looking like they are facing a corner. The round bases seem fine to be since then you can just turn the fig toware the facing it is intended to have.

Also the 3.5 change of monsters taking up a square of size 2 or three squares wide may play right into this round base thing. Maybe thats why the change was made (or part of the reason).

'Hey guys, the new mini manufacturer says they can only to round bases but they can be variable size... what do we do about our whacky one by two square creatures?'
'We make them all square based of different sizes, hey that will make it easier to change facing as well. Thats the ticket!'

Just a thought.

First off, these are prototypes so the bases and paint jobs may change.
Second, if these sell cheap I think it's going to be promising, however, if these cost more than what the quality dictates then it's going to be "pegwarmer city" and we'll be calling this Chainmail 2 after a few months. I'm praying that WotC doesn't add a collectibilty factor to this. Now that would suck.

Other companies have and still are trying to sell prepainted minis but the price is the main factor. If these are being shown at GAMA I would think a price has already been given. Anyone heard anything on that?

Interesting stuff. Makes the models in the expansions as being $1.25 each. The 40mm to 65 mm size is a confirmed typo. September is the release date, if all this is correct... 6 months.

Holy cow, I can't wait to get a pack of these. Make that many packs.

And thank goodness they disposed of square bases. With 1" diameter round bases, I can turn the figs any which way and they'll always fit in the 1"-wide corridors in my hirstarts.com castles.

I hope we'll see more (in-focus, well-lit) pics.

I'd be really excited if they weren't random.

True, there is some fun in getting to use mini's I may have never actually bought specificly.

However, if I need a mind flayer, I need a mind flayer. I don't want to have to spend $100 looking for that ellusive "rare" mindflayer mini.

If all monsters/races/npcs have at least 1 "common" variation, it want be too bad. I hope the "rares" are specific NPCs or something.

I suppose we'll get some people stripping the paint jobs and doing their own on these things...but at least you won't have bare metal/plastic until you get around to painting the others, like most minis.

Do you think the bases will have a number or code? Right now I use colored foam circles with numbers on a battle instead of miniatures. I'd rather use these miniatures, but if I get several of one sort of orc or something I'd sure hope the bases were numbered...
