More D&D Miniature Pictures

Well, the assumption of rarity levels is based on fairly good history with anything marked 'collectable' (sp?). Basically we are looking at a product marketed, packaged, and probably made by the same company as Mage Knight. MK followed the CCG industry in its set up and is doing QUITE well it would seem with MK, MechWarrior, and HeroClix. The main stay of these products are closed boxes of randomly packed minis with rarity. Now the good news is that if WoTC follows the WizKids model on this, we will see BIG models packaged seperately (I mean really big, like the MK titans, dragons, chariots, etc) in like a clear plastic packaging that you know you are getting. I would hope that we see this as well.

So do we know the packaging will be based on rarity? No. Do we suspect it will be? Yes. But no amount of hoping it won't be at this point will convince me until I see someone from WoTC say otherwise. I mean, come on, the packages have generic art on them, and no words saying which models are in side. They are gonna be random packed. :)

Thats my giant suspicion.

Personally I think packaging based on rarity wouldn't be to bad a problem so long as things like goblins, kobolds and orcs are common and solitary creatures are rarer.

You don't want to end up with one goblin archer but 12 iron golems.

Also keep in mind if they sell well, there WILL be people that are going to make a secondary market of figures sold individually (ala MK and MtG).

Apparently its acronymn day.

TTFN! (okay, you are now allowed to shoot me...):p

I do not pay too much attention to certain things anymore, but I have seen Mage knight boxes at my local Hastings Book Music and Video store. They generally sell them a little cheaper than the MSRP rfom what I can gather. Also, I have seen packages of CCGs at places like Wal-Mart. Anyone know if Wal-Mart sells Mage Knight or Heroclix? How about Target or some of the other deep discount general merchandise stores? Ten bucks for 8 minis may even drop to 8 bucks for 8 minis that you wouldn't even have to paint... just thinking out loud here. I remember buying the old D&D stuff back in the early 80s at stores like that. As a kid it was great to not have to convince your mom to drive to a specialty store or order from a catalog. She could see the merchandise right there and then decide if I could get it or not. Think of the children... the children...!

I like the look of this. Buying prepainted mini's is great for me, since I have no patience for painting...

On an side note, when my older brother and his wife had their first child, I remember him threatening to drop a 'Baby Golem' on the party...this seemed like a perfect thread to share that bit of information with you!

Baby Golem... ew... thing of the messes.... "Is that thing to scale!? AAAhhh!"

Anyways. My hopes/thoughts are that any store that carries D&D will be carrying these. This is a bit larger than any store that carries Reapers. My local RPG shop generally has like... ten reaper blisters around at any one time. But the local Hobby Town carries D&D books and MK, which makes me think they will carry this. At least I can hope. =)

Just a little on the bases, I thought these figs were going to be D&D compatible. I guess I'm a little confused as to why you would us a round base for a game that uses square grid.

I got no problem with round bases; I prefer them actually. With round bases you can rotate your figure to face whatever direction (yeah, yeah... no facing in D&D but it helps with drama) without having the corners poke out of the square. I like that more... I use my Chainmail figs and really like the round bases.

My problem is with the apparant width of the bases. The minotaur is a large creature but his face is 5ft x 5ft, so his base should fit into a 1" square. The picture, however, makes it look like the minotaur base would be wider than the mind flayer right next to it. Ugh.

Simply put, if the R&D team of this new mini line totally tossed out the concept of "face" I'm going to be really dissapointed. It's not rocket science: if the face of the creature is 5ft x 5ft then the mini's base should fit into a 1" square. Period.

The bases of the new D&D minis should reflect the "face" found in the MM... shouldn't they? I mean... otherwise why bother? How much space a creature takes up can (and usually does, in my game) determine the course of combat. Why in world would WotC put out minis that totally disregard the rules found in "more mini-friendly" D&D3.5?

If they put out an adult red dragon mini (which they should), will it have a perfectly round base even though the "footprint" (face) is 10'x20' (or 2"x4")?

Does this not concern anyone else?

Isn't 'face' and the whole this monster takes up these square thing one of things they are changing for 3.5? I thought I had heard read this on ENWorld's newpage but can't find it anywhere.

If it is that coudl explain the differences we are seeing.

Also these may not necesarily be the bases that get shipped with the minis - also the paint jobs may not bewhat the minis will look like. I am hoping that they look this good but I will have to see some close up.

I hope you're right Mr. Bovine; a mini for a creature with a 5'x5' face that has a base width of 2" does me no good at all. As long as the bases match up with the rules for face I'll be happy.

All large creatures will have a face of 10 ft x 10 ft in 3.5 ed.
