More on shadows....(shadowdancers)

Do you think it was Monte Cook's intention that the Shadowdancer PrC be able to summon shadow companions that could create their own shadow spawn? Has he ever commented on this?

The only "official" thing I've ever seen on this is a
Forgotten Realms NPC shadowdancer who has Create Spawn
clearly marked as his shadow's ability.

I've got an SD in my campaign, too, and I've ruled that
shadowdancers' shadows don't spawn other shadows,
just to avoid the whole mess. :)

Hope that helps.

Interesting. Where did you see this NPC? FRCS? The official website? Thanks.

One of my players has a necromancer character with a shadow under his control. I decided that though the primary shadow is under his control, any shadows spawned by shadow 1 are under shadow 1's control. And shadow 1 is quite resentful of being under the necromancer's control. So the first thing shadow 1 commands his spawn to do is kill the necromancer. :)

In one recent combat, the party used the necromancer's shadow to dispatch two bad guys, and then they had to turn around and fight the two shadow spawn to protect the necromancer!

So far, it's seemed to balance things out okay.

That's cool, but since the Shadowdancer's summoned companions share his alignment, there wouldn't be any resent by his minions if he was good, so I was curious as to what the "official" intention of those powers were.

Right now, the Shadowdancer is almost like a character with a Mogwai pet from the movie Gremlins. The first one might be sweet and nice and your buddy, but you need to be careful because if he multiplies the new ones can turn nasty quick.

Actually, I just found that NPC. FRCS p. 155. So it is indeed official that Shadowdancer shadow companions create spawn, as the PrC description in the DMG implies. Interesting.

Now the only question is whether or not the spawn share the alignment of the Shadowdancer as well....

I don't think they share the Shadowdancer's alignment... However...

Just order your Shadow creature to order it's "shadow spawns" to never attack you. Even if they are evil and want to kill you, they should still have to obey it's parent.

Right. This is all well and good as long as your summoned companion doesn't get killed.... ;)

I allow my necromancer to attempt to order his shadow creature to order its spawn to not attack, but ruled that it requires a "test of wills," i.e. a Charisma check.

I see, however, how the good shadowdancer's shadow won't present this problem. Interesting dilemma.

I've done the same thing in my game. I've also ruled that the shadow summoned by the SD is a creature from the shadow dimension, not an undead shadow. I've been contemplating removing the STR drain from it as well.
