In one recent combat, the party used the necromancer's shadow to dispatch two bad guys, and then they had to turn around and fight the two shadow spawn to protect the necromancer!
So far, it's seemed to balance things out okay.

Just order your Shadow creature to order it's "shadow spawns" to never attack you. Even if they are evil and want to kill you, they should still have to obey it's parent.

I've got an SD in my campaign, too, and I've ruled that
shadowdancers' shadows don't spawn other shadows,
just to avoid the whole mess.
