Morrus' Gen Con Reports & Sundry Experiences in America

OK, I have a few minutes to briefly cover Saturday and Sunday at Gen Con before I head to bed. Gotta get up early tomorrow and catch a plane to New York, followed by a train to Boston to see Piratecat. Luckily, Mark's promised to give me a wake-up call. Assuming he wakes up, of course.

I spent a couple of hours on Saturday wandering around the exhibitor hall, checking out all the booths. I met a whole bunch of people, and missed far more. It was great to finally meet Nicole Lindroos of Green Ronin - both times I visited the booth, Chris Pramas wasn't there, unfortunately. I dropped by the Fiery Dragon booth to say hi, and was delighted to meet Claudio Pozas! For those who have never met him, Claudio is the nicest, friendliest person in the entire world. I kept my promise to buy on of his art pieces, and came home with an original Pozas Flumph, which will soon become the new EN World mascot!

I sepnt time at the Mystic Eye booth (along with Thunderhead Games) - they're a fun bunch. I also went out for a quick meal with James of RPGNow (along with his crew). Also, I grabbed a coffee with Joseph Goodman of Goodman Games, who is a thoroughly nice fellow.

There were a whole bunch of publishers who I completely missed over the weekend - either because I couldn't seem to find their booths, or because I ran out of time. Apologies to anyone who didn't get to put up with me for a few minutes - you're probably better off that way!

I bumped into Monte a couple of times while wandering the exhibit hall; I'm pleased to report that Monte is as nice a chap in real life as he is online. His wife, Sue, is lovely too. I also spoke to Clark Peterson of Necromancer Games, who kindly gave me a copy of Gygax's Necropolis.

Adlon and I were workng together most of the day trying to put together a web page for the ENnies results. Unfortunately, that didn't work out so well, and I'm going to have to make sure that the technical side of things are covered better next year. For the moment, of course, you can see the results in the d20 Publishers forum, and I'll be preparing a proper web page as soon as I get home. Adlon may well have one up at Mortality.net before then.

Saturday night was spent at the Safe House again where myself, Teflon Billy, Al and Mark linked up with the Mystic Eye/THG crew. Adlon was also there, as were the folks from Twin Rose Software (Chris from Twin Rose was very excited about the recent developments in the d20 software industry, although I had to dispute his claim that it was the biggest news this year! :)).

On Sunday, Al and I dropped in at the end of Piratecat's last RPGA game. We went out for lunch, and were joined by one of his friends - I'm terribly embarrassed, but I don't remember her name! She was very friendly and fun to talk to, though. We all headed over to the RPGA awards ceremony, but Al and I had to leave about halfway through to meet Mark and catch our train to Chicago. I hear, though, that PC won the DM of the Year award again, for the second year running. Go PC!

That's it for the moment. Got to do important things like sleeping. Al and I have spent the last couple of days with Mark in Chicago and have had great fun - especially today when we met a few other EN Boarders for lunch and a visit to the art museum. It was great to meet you guys! You can see some pics above from Mark, taken in Chicago during the last couple of days, and he took a whole bunch more today.

Morris, you met 8 billion people in four days...don't be embarassed about forgetting one name. :) But it was me...Elaine. And I had a great time, too. It was amusing to get your and Al's perspective on the whole GenCon thing. I'm glad you managed to catch up with Mark and got to Chicago ok!

Actually, this is his third Pinnacle Award in a row...he won in 2000, too. Of course, the trophy was much smaller that time...;)

Here are the photos from day two of MoRuss and Al's stay in Chicago. As always, some are quite large and I'm sure that MoRuss will want to resize and crop them a bit better when he returns and gets the chance to do so-

A number of the EN Boarders managed to get together for lunch.

After which we went to the Harold Washington Public Library, the largest single library building in the USA (I'm told).

I took a lot of shots of their Arms and Armor collection. Some are rather dark, I am afriad, because of their no "Flash" photography policy but here are a bunch that aren't too bad...

I'm currently sitting in Piratecat's study, using his computer to post. He picked up Al and myself and drove us to Boston (from just north of New York, of course, not from Chicago!). As we drove, PC regaled us with many useful (and less-useful) facts about the Boston area (did you know that Bostonians eat more ice cream than anyone else in the US?) We got here fairly late, met PC's three-legged cat, and grabbed a delicious Thai meal before PC and KidCthulhu showed us the house and headed for bed.

Tomorrow, we'll be wandering around Boston. In the evning, Al and I will be joining in PC's D&D game. Not much else to report, really - the day was spent travelling (we left Chicago at 9am and arrived in Boston at about 9pm).

PC's house is very nice - when he and KidCthulhu bought it is was pretty run down, but over time they have had is practically redesigned. One of the coolest features is a secret door - one of the bookshelves swings out to reveal the study!

That's because we have the best ice cream :) Hope you have fun in Boston! Stop by Pandemonium Books and Games in Harvard Square if you get the chance!

Balsamic Dragon

I think Bostonians prefer Dunkin' Donuts to ice cream. You can't swing a Piratecat by his tail without hitting at least two of them.

I'd be surprised if the density of DD's wasn't at least two or three per square mile.

GenCon was amazing! Had a really mind blowing few days, helped a lot by meeting so many friendly people. Just wanted to pop in and say hi to everyone and thanks for showing me such a good time...

While I got you guys on the same thread, I wanted to thank you and Mark for an amazing time! That trip down the river with those folks was something else! (espelcially when they hit the stump and we thought we were gonna be swimming baclkx to our hotels!)

Those folks were pretty lcool that took us down the river, but I ha;ve no idea what their names were! Good thing they werend't muggers I guess.

PS Russ - All of it together IS big news. E-tools and PCGen and all the news about Campaign Suite I can't talk about yet... All in one weekend. What other news lcould their be? :)

I'm sorry I missed you. The only time we've gotten to meet was onstage at the ENnies and that wasn't really the time or place for chitchat. Despite plans for us to have volunteer GMs for GenCon, I ended up running Freeport games for four hours every day. These were usually during exhibit hours, hence my absence from the booth. Between those games, booth duty, and business meetings, I had all of an hour to walk the floor of the show over the course of the con. On the upside, I only spent $51 on stuff this year and it was all minis (Roman legionairre gorillas? sign me up!).

Nicole and I may come to Dragonmeet though, so maybe we'll have a chance to meet up then.
