Most wins by conference.

My google-fu is weak. I am trying to figure out which conference (D-1) has the most college football championships, as well as the basketball conferences.

Can anyone help, or supply a link?

I'd say the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) is probably right up there for sheer number of championship wins. Mostly by either
P(d)uke or CAROLINA.

And yes, I chose that color on purpose!

Thanks for the link.

Was hoping to get a list, to see where the SEC ranks, and where the Big 12 ranks. A guy at work and I were having a discussion about it.

I'd be shocked if it wasn't the Big Ten for football (even if you don't count Penn State's pre-Big Ten titles); the other conferences except for the Pac 10 have changed their membership too much over the years, though if you count titles before the split between I-A and I-AA, the Ivy League might very well be in the running.

Almost certainly the Big 12 ranks fairly low, just because it's relatively new; its members have won a lot of titles, but they were mostly in the Big 6/7/8 or SWC when they did.

Yup. Going by NCAA tournament titles (definitive now; there was a time when the NIT was more prestigous than the NCAAs)...

The Big Ten has, oddly, 10.

Assuming Kentucky was always in the SEC, SEC schools have 9 (the only non-Kentucky titles are recent).

The ACC has 6.

The Big East has 5; current Big East members who weren't in the Big East at the time add another 5.

The Big 12 actually has none; Kansas and Oklahoma State each won two titles as part of the Big 6/7/8.

Current Mountain West teams have 3 titles, though 2 were probably pre-WAC, and the other was pre-MWC.

Which leaves the titles won by Holy Cross (1947), CCNY (1950), La Salle (1954), San Fransisco (1955-1956), Loyola Ill. (1963), and UTEP (1966).

Yea, Kentucky has always been in the SEC.

As for the Big 12, weren't they known as the Big 8, before they added more members? If so, I would consider them two conferences the same.

The Big 6 became the Big 7, and then the Big 8. In 1996, about half of the SWC (Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, and Texas Tech) joined with the the old Big 8 to make the Big 12. Considering the impact of the Texas schools, I don't think you can reasonably consider the Big 12 to be a simple extension of the old Big 8.
