MotW: Deepwood Sniper.

I hope this isn't just another person yanking our chain on MotW. Sounds interesting if it isn't, but this does seem suspiciously troll like.
*chuckle*

Well, the art of a good troll is to sound real enough to fool some people but just 'out there' enough to let others in on the joke. I've never had the skill (or the attitude) to pull off a good troll.

Everything about the Deepwood Sniper is straight out of the book.

EDIT: Except for Hunter's Mercy, that spell is from the Forgotten Realms book of Magic.

I don't think that's inherently unreasonably, depending on what you need to do to qualify for the prestige class. Let's assume that you can't qualify for it until 6th level; that means that your arrow is a x4 crit at 13th lvl. High, but not horrible for the level.

What does the PC give up in order to get the cool sniping ability?

The requirements are:
+5 BAB
4 Skill Ranks in Hide, Move Silently and Spt
Feats: Far Shot, Point Blank Shot and Wpn Focus (bow or crossbow).

There is a lot of overlap with the other bow PCs (Order of the Bow and Arcane Archer).

At 7th level (5 Ranger/2 Dpwd Snpr) the crit multiplier for a long bow would be x4. At 12th level (5 Ranger/7 Dpwd Snpr) the crit multiplier for a bow would be x5.

I'll crunch some numbers later tonight to compare this to a 12th level (7 Ranger/5 Arcn Archr) to see if they are approx. equal or not.

w00t!

That's a death machine archer in the making. Coupled with an Fighter/Ranger/OoBi that'd make a mean competitor for an Arcane Archer.

Can't wait to get my grubby hands on the book.

That is pretty scarey, but it doesn't seem broken to me.

The reason being that you can't funnel a 40 str (+22 damage) into a bow shot the way you can a melee weapon, so you don't have some insane number getting multiplied.

Add to that the fact that you can't charge with a ranged weapon, and the ability falls even farther behind a melee smack down.

What evens it out, and I may do some number crunching too (to see how close it comes to evening it out) is that you can have an arrow that effectively a +10 weapon. That's +50 damage in addition to the random damage the arrow does (and any strength bonus you may be able to put into a mighty bow).

That is pretty scarey.

Is there a max to the strength bonus for a mighty bow? I don't recall one way or the other.

Well, there are no rules for making it go any higher than the ones in the PHB, so I have always told my players that you can't get any higher with a mundane bow. They've never asked how to get a magical one with a higher bonus though.

Anyway, I don't allow it because the progression in the PHB is linear, and it just seems wrong to have a normal sized bow that allows someone with the strength of a giant to use it, and have said bow be made of normal materials and only cost 1500gp, when a bow for a strong human costs 500gp.

Ysgarran,

Could you please let us know the benefits of Power Critical and Improved Two-Weapon Fighting?

Improved Two-Weapon Fighting [General]
Prerequisites: Two-Weapon Fighting, Ambidexterity, base attack bonus +9 or higher.
Benefit: In addition to the standard single extra attack the character gets with an off-hand weapon, the character gets a second attack with the off-hand weapon, albeit at a -5 penalty.
Normal: Without this feat, the character can only get a single extra attack with an off-hand weapon.
Special: A ranger who meets only the base attack bonus prerequisite can gain this feat, but can only use it when wearing light armor or no armor.

Prereq: +12 Bab, Improved Crit w/ weapon and proficiency.

benefit: Once per day you can declare a single melee attack with your chosen weapon to be an automatic threat before you make your attack roll. If the attack is successful, you roll to confirm the criticial regardless of whether the actual attack roll was a threat...

...hmmm...
A nice feat, makes me think of the paladin I want to run with 'Divine Might'.
